E 8 -~Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 11, 1O~4 Exchange opens in Orono downtown The traditional ribbon was cut last Saturday for the'opening of the latest addition te the Orono dewntewn, The Fashion Exchange. Taking part in the epening were Murray Taylor, cbairman of the Downtown Association, Councillor Ann Dreslinski, Donna Hutten, the store's first custemer, Catherine Camnes, owner and'Susan Lemay of Orone. Let ter to Editor Dear Rey, 1 read with a sinking heart of the proposed plan initiated by the D.B.I.A. te pave part of the Clarke Library grounds te previde more parking fer the downtown coe. This matter was front page news in yeur May 13, 1987 edition of the Orono Times. It's interesting how sorte things don't change. I stili feel as strongly new, as I did 7 years age, that te pave over this green space would be a grievous error. TMe park-like grounds containing the black locusts and walnuts (stili a rarity te this part of Ontario) remains the enly green spiace within the tewn core. It continues te help separate the business and residentiai sections of town. It supports rather than detracts from lecal residential property values. Many smali urban areas must leok with envy at what we, as a smail community have considered important and maintained ever the years. Putting esthetics aside for the moment, I address the parking issue. As a long terni resident bere in tewn, I applaud the business owners, employees and tenants who consciously and consistently park away from the downtown ce re te allow parking for custemers. Those of yeu who habitually park next te yeur business or take up a space that is previded for one of -your patrons have made a statement tee. To me, this is loud and clear that you are thinking of only yourseif and don't care enougb for your business or that of your neighbour te be bethered to help keep a customer happy. Stili 7 years later, parking on Park and Church Streets is net used te capacity. Why pave at taxpayers' expense when the existing library parking lot is rarely used during its' off heurs? What happened te the proposais to create diagonal parking on Main St. and to sbift parking te the east side of Church St. te create more spaces? Pod parking by the Woods Walk and upgrading the-3 or 4 spaces already zoned for public parking at the nerth end west.side of the cere were discussed at one Urne tee. Ail of these suggestions have menit and would net mean losing our beautiful library grounds. Parteofthe reason this tewn is such a pleasant place te live is how weil people work teward a cemmon goal (such as building the Community Centre and keeping the Library from disappearing - remember?!). Why net try with renewed effort te park away from the coe D.B.I.A. members. A voIuntary parking s ticker display campaign te show you care and 'park a block away' may do wonders for custemer satisfaction!
