- rono Wetpé nsWdedy My~,19 Parents and students should know An article in the Toronto Star on Tuesday written by the heati of die Guidance Departmnent at Gravenhurst High School states that i his opinion there is a systemn already ini place that accurately assesses both students and the high schools they corne from and ail that is needeti is to validate the system. It is noted that at the bottom of every University application formn students are asked to approve release of their first year grades back to their schools from which they had graduated. He said most of the students in his school do give this permission and that it is possible to see how the students have fared i comnparison with others from other schools and if marking percentages are maintaineti by die school.. The point is also matie that students ftom certain high schools consistantly maintain their grades whle students from other schools, as consistantly, have their grades drop fromn 10 to 20 to 30 percent. Universities know which high schools produce graduates whose marks are an accurate reflection of ability. Some Universities go so far as to admit dhat they adjust inconiing marks baseti on the performance of past students from the saine school. Universities have collecteti data that allows thema t o identify resuits from particular boards as well as individual schools. Why isn't this information available to students and parents anti, yes, even to trustees who should move to correct systeins that are failing the students, the community and even the trustees responsibility. At the cost of education today parents anti students should know, more than just by words, that the standard of a high school education is being proviieti. The Star article points out that the failure rate at Universities is well guarieti but that the rate of failure can run fromn 20 to 35 percent. Is $ 10,000 for one year of university an investmnent are a total loss. At the present time much time and money is being spent on testing throughout Ontario and, yes, in our local systein. Let parents anti stutients know how they matie out and how their high school stacks with the rest in Ontario. And put some irons i the hantis of trustees. The information is available - use it.
