Qg ueen Park Repot from Gord Muls MPP Durham East Last week, at the Ontario Legisilature, the gaings-on proved ta be far from mundanie. On Manday, after Question Period, I sat on the Estimates Committee, as they examined the budget requirements for The Solicitor General & Corrections for 1994- 95. This raIe is usually assigned ta the Parliamentary Assistant who fields questions from the ail party committcc members in relation ta budget spending by the ministry. Strangely enough, an Monday aftemnoon the questians most difficuit ta field ail came from members of the govemment. Sa much for the cammanly held belief that questions from yaur friends are of the gentle variety! On Tuesday maminig, we held the final meeting for the '1' Day celebratians being held in Toronto on Sunday, June 5th. The meeting went rcally wcll, everytliing is naw in place and it promises ta be just a great day. We are ahl keeping aur fingers crossed for fine weather. In the aiternoon, 1 once againsat on the Estimates Committee. During the aftemnoon we had Ontaria's Chief Coroner appear befare the cammittee ta explain the budget of that dcpartment. He said that the clasing of the RCMP Laboratory in Ottawa wîll place a new burden for forensic services on the resources of Ontarios Solicitor General. Once again, we sec a down-loading af cosns from the federal gavernment upon the provincial government. Yet another example of just how the Ontario Libéral MP's stand up for us! The Coroner was foliowed by the Ontario Fic Marshal, who gave some interesting facts in view of recent fire deaths in basement apartaients in Ontario. He pointed out that fire deaths are now 20 per cent less than in previaus years. In the case of the recent basement fires and the deaths of children, he said that in every case the owners af the apartmnents had failed ta comply with local municipal by-laws that called for smoke detectars ta be installed. Our legislation ta make basement apartments legal has somehow become thc whipping- boy for these unfortunate deaths. Nothing could be further fram the truth, by making the basement apartments legal it will allaw tenants ta make complaints in regard ta unsafe living conditions, something that before the legislation they were reluctant ta make for fear af evictian. On Thursday morning 1 was at the Standing Committee of' General Government, ostentatiously ta carry Bill 21 through clause-by-clause in the absence af my colleague Paul Wessenger, who was in Kingston for theMinister af Health. Once again Conservative MPP Margaret Marland did ail she cauld ta block Uic process of Bihl 21, which is of vital înterest ta thase who- reside in Wilmiot Creek, and other cammunities like it. To emphasize the height ai thc ridiculous (no pun intended) Ms. Marland asked questions for over an hour, pertaining ta basement apartments in module homes.- Since homes of this type have about a two-faot crawl space under them, 1 suggested ta Ms. Mariand Uiat perhaps we would be praviding applicable legisiation ta caver a new breed of humans, ahl under two-foot in height, who wauid bc the occupants of the basement apartmcnts in modulai homes. I hope you can sec my frustration in tryîng ta move important legisiation along, while having ta, put up with the deliberate stalling tactics, employcd solcly on bchalf oi friends of the Tories! Anyway, Ms. Marland ieft Uic committec during Uic afternoan, and Uings then proceeded smoothly. AIl Uiat remains ta bc passcd now are but two ainendinents, anc pertaining ta flrst right of refusail ic i sale of homes and the second amendmcnt, over Uic location for placement of "For Sale" signs. On Thursday aftemoon, during Question Period, 1 was expeiled irom the legisiature for not withdrawing my remark that another Conservative, MPP Ernie Eves had lied in his question ta the Minister of Consumer & Carporate Relations. I refused ta withdraw my allegatian since Mr. Eves had said that Scugog Township Council had na knowledge about the praposed Binga Hall an Scugog Island until last week. The information about the facility had been printed in the Part Perry media abaut a year aga. And further, I had tald the Mayar af Scugog Township of the praposal persanally at abaut the saine tiine. I dan't knaw wha fed the information ta the Canservatives ini arder ta have it raised ini the Legisiation, but who ever was responsible, isn't helping at ail with this political rhetoric. Ail this cheap political gamesmanship does is raise the ire of those bent upan warking tawards crcating harmony between the First Nations and the local community of Port Perry and area. 1 have just searchcd the files in aur legisiature computer and have faund that up ta the end of the season which endcd in December 1993, 1 havecnigaged in debate or asked questions on behaîf of constituents on one hundred and fourteen different occasions during this 35th Parlianient. As 1 look back at what I have said on ail those occasions, 1 have faund myseif asking, "Did I say that?" Hansard, the record of everything said in -the Legisiature, is (Continued page 5) What are you doing this summer? Looking for something new and fun? Ves?
