It bas always been aduits, authority figures taking a stand ta make an atternpt ta stop companies from destroying wetlands. Petitions have circulated around communities, along with demonstrations boping that they wil make a difference. Well times are a changin'! On Tuesday, June 7, 1994 students from Bowmanvile H.S., Bowmanville Senio r P.S. and students from Whitby gathered where the aid Bowmanville arena was. Students had gane araund in the community and got people ta sign a petition ta support the cause. Sa, along with a 500-naine petitian, Leali Houston and lier supporters marched through downtown Bowmanville up ta the Bowmanville City Hall. Many people's heads turned at the sigit, of approximately 100 students chanting and waving their signs. "Say No To Environmental Abuse!", anc sign read. Leali Houston, a grade, 10 student from Bowmanville H.S. along with ber parents organized the event in ail efforts to preserve West Side Creek Marsh. Leah Houston began to organize the rally when she and lier parents learned that St. Marys Cernent applied ta have the creek diverted whicb feeds the West Side Creek, and ta drain the marsh and quarry. If this happens the marshcs wildlifc wiil suffer. Leab Houston bas taken a stand. A student is trying ta preserve aur future environment. The student read a speech which outlined the group's concerns. Mayor Diane Hainre listened and then proceeded ta inform the group that counicil bas alrcady passed a resolution ta pratect the marsh. Under the town's present plan the marsh is afforded a "special designation for aggregate extraction," but council does encourage St. Marys ta explore other alternative lands. 1Leah Houston, plans ta appear at another municipal counicil meeting ta further appeal the saving of the West Side Creek Marsh. Durham East 4-H Club meet at Trillium stables Meeting Date, May 26, 1994" The Durham East 4H Horse Club lias just held their 3 regular club meetings at Trillium Horse Stables in Orono.-This ycar's Horse Club bas approximately 20 members. We appreciate and would like ta tbank the Sampson family for their liospitality and the use of Trillium Stables. Our leaders this year are Shelley Mielie, Phyllis Dewell, Suzanne Asliby and Shelley Bouglien. To start off the niglit we beld elections. The following people were electcd to office, President.. Buffy Rodgcrs, Vice-President - Elizabeth Millsan, Secretary -, Natalie Price and ReEporter - Melonie Allin. We then watclied a film on foaling. We learned wlat sliauld bc done while a marc'& giving birtb. At this meeting we also picked, a "Go For the Gold" teain. The following four people will be representing aur club at the "Go For- the Gold" an August 4tli, Ship ordered to leave harbour .Cobourg council recently passed a resolution ardering Uic Heavenbound, a flaatingt non- denominational ministry, ta leave the Cobourg liarbour. The 135 foot former coast guard vessel was to leave on May 31Lt The Ministry had applied ta dock at thc Oshawa harbour. The Heavenbound provided courses in seamanship and religious counselling ta troubled youths. 1994, Leah McRobcrts, Tanya Allin, Steplien Found and Buffy Rodgers. "Go For the Gold" is -a competition where 4H Clubs from Durhiam compete against each other. Thcy must have their hands and minds quick and ready ta answer question related to agriculture. Meeting Date, June 2, 1994 We werefortunate to have Dr. Green, Uhe veterinarian frm thc Newcastle Vet Clinic lacated in thc newly renovated Post Office, as guest speaker. He spoke about thc proper health care for borses relating ta respiratary, hooves, teetli, heurt, and stomach. We discussed confirmation and judging with Shelley Miche. Dont farget the Annual Judging Competitian held at Uic Orono Fair Grounds on July 20, 1994. Our next meeting will be lield August 31, 1994 at 10-.00 a.m. at Batterwoad Stables in Welcome. Melonie AU!b age 12 $400,000 to prepare documents It has been estirnated that Uic cost of preparing documentation for an Ontario Municipal Board hearing concern.ing the developinent of a new dump in Haldimand Township would cost upward of $400,00. The dump would bc used for municipalities in the western end of Northumberland County. The cost of the hearing would be in addition and somne are placing a time of four months for Uic hearing. Homestead His Stable takes part in competition Five riders from Homestead Riding School competed Sunday, May 22nd at the Parliament Hilis Stables in Cavan, Ontario. Nicole Marrett riding Avenging Angel in the Novice Division were the Reserved Champions. Alex DaCasta riding Dust Buster placed fourth in Novice Equitation, fifth in Novice Pleasure, fourth in Novice Hack and second in Novice Over Fences. Lisa Shear riding Tickle Me Fancy placed fifth in Novice Hack and fourth in Novice Over Fences. In the Open Walk-Trot Division, Alex DaCasta riding Dust Buster placed first in Hunter Over Fences. Nicole Marrett riding Avenging Angel placed fifth in Hunter Over Fences; and Lisa Shear riding Avenging Angel placed second in Hunter Over Fences and fifth in Hunter Over Fences. 1In the Low Division Wendy Clark riding Dust Buster placed first in Working Hunter Over Fences, second in Working Hunter Over Fences and fifth in Hunter Hack.
