It was the family of local daughtcr, Diane Langstaff, wlio brought mare tda 150 people together this anc day ta ht a fcw balîs, cat a few hiot dogs and hamburgers, and remember how little we really know about Alzhcimers Disease. Nobody knows what exactly causes Alzhcimcrs. This fatal disease is liard ta diagnose, and only then thraugh a lengtliy proccss of 'diagnasis by eliminatian'. Often, it lias had a grip upon thc patient for a couple of years before forgetfulness, confusion and orientation begin ta interfere with their lives. In thc later stages, the persan becomes increasingly immobile, unable ta communicate, is vulnerable ta other illness and requires mare than thc care a loving farnily can give at home. For the past 7 ycars, I have watched my sister, Kasia, nad lier husband, Danny struggle with Uic effects of lis mothers illncss. Without diminishing his mot.hers own private strugglcs, Alzhcimers affects an entire farnily. "Wliat this means, " Kasia tels me, "is that evcryone lias ta pull tagether. Sometimes Diane doesn't undcrstand what is happening ta lier and she becomes quiet and witlidrawn. Once a fun-loving and supportive mather, she is'a totally withdrawn grandmother. This is sad for us ail, but we learn to work with the ups, and deal with thc downs". It becomes increasingly difficuit ta remember faces and naines... even of a spouse, a child, a grandchild. That is why the Langstaff family, a group of volunteers and mare than 120 bail-players gathcrcd in Kendal on Saturday ta play some mixcd 3-pitch bail. 0f the ten teares rcgistcred, twa werc from Starkville, two from Kendal and anc (the al-round-A-chamnps) from Newcastlc Village. Most winning tcams donatcd their prize money ta the Alzheimers Saciety which received a cheque for a grand sum of $1,231.00. The Langstaff family would like ta extcnd a special "Thankyou" ta al the volunteers who hlpcd witli thc event, Brian Foster and the Kendal Recreatianal Basebail Associatian and especially, the spirits of sunshinc and kind licarts.
