6 -rolG Wekli Tmes WenesayAuest 10, 1ei4 It's a big Durham picnic Sunday 1If there was anything else added to the schedule of activities there is no doubt that Sunday, August 14th would have to be extended to have much more daylight. It is the Family Picnic being held at the Enniskillen Conservation Area north-west of Hampton. The activities run from 1 to 5 by Helen MacDonald We all learn best by seeing. By touching. By experience. Children from cities learn about cows, and that millc comes from them but the real knowing is hands-on, so to speak. A couple of weeks ago, my two nieces from Montreal were visiting us. For me, having two extra females in this house of guys was a nice change. They talk differently. They play differently. They are just different in ways that I miss sometimes. They are also very Ïcity'. Like I was unil I moved out here as an unwilling teenager . .. only to neyer really leave because I feIl ini love with a local fellow and with the country. Justine and Rainna brought back those early days. On a walk on our road (with no sidewalks, they note) there !,s so much t ssce. Trees. Fields. "How do you know what the crop is?", they wonder. Cows lazily enjoy grass. "Can we pet them?", they ask, not realizing how big they really are. Not realizing that cattle are not 'petting' animals. "You've got to scratch or rub their forehead reaP,' hard to endear yourself te them", they are told. So, two young girls from the city, one seven, the other ten, wait for a big head to bring itself p.m. with a full schedule of events for the kids and plenty to entertain the adults. A music program runs from one to four o'clock. If you want to be where the action is you had better be at the Enniskillen Conservation Area on Sunday and its ail free. A Celebrate Durham '94 event. within the reach of their small hands. Eyes as dark as deep pools reflect their apprehensive faces. They rub them. "They're rough!" The cows push their nioses into their shoulders. They want more. After a time, one of the cows lifts hier tail, and a warm stream comes pouring from beneath it. Rainna, meanwhile. has noticed that another one of the 'cows' is peeing from mid-belly. She looks at one, then at the other, then back to the first. "How come that one does it from under hier tail, and the other one does it from under her tummy?" "Cause one is a heifer, and one is a steer," Kyle nonchalantly informs lher. 1"What do you mean? Are they different kinds of cows?" Kyle snickers. "No. One has a pens .. . the other one doesn't." Rainna snickers. She bends down to have a reeeally good look. Her eyes widen. We can't wait 'tii this gets back home to MontreaL. About twenty years ago, just after I moved to the country, I was sitting in the back seat of a car, minding my own business, looking out the window as four of us were engrossed in conversation. We drove by a field where several beautiful horses Provide funding for update of classroom technology, Durham East M.P.P.
