O Oron ~e.khjTImesj, Wednoaday~, Au~ust 10, ~#94 ______________ Leaders for guide outing Elizabeth BAteman, Hampton with Vicki Culliney, West Chester, Penn., Maria McKee, West Grove, Penn. and Alice Danna, Lindsay had much to tallc about at the Girl Guide ba rbecue, held at the Allun farm recently north-east of Leskard. Moorehen with young a highlight of Port outîng by Roy Forrester In our last edition of the Times we mentioned that wîthin but a few minutes of the Village Bill Bunting and 1 had sighted some 28 different species of birds driving nord-. along Best Road to Skelding Road. 1The following week we decided we would try an entirely different habitat to see just what the resuit might be as far as number of species are concerned. It meant a visit to the Port Perry Sewage Lagoons which must take up to 60 to 70 acres of niostly sewage water enclosed in six lagoons. The sewage lagoon habitat brought before our view 30 different species and we spent about the same amount of time as the Best Road trip. There were other birds such as robins, a cardinal, Gold Finich, starlings that were not counted in the 30 as they were sighted in the tree portion of the lagoons. 0f most interesting was the appearance of a Common Moorhen or Gallinule swimming out from the shore weeds with four young chicks. 1 guess one could caîl the Gallinule a chicken-Iike water fowl and it is easily separated from the ducks. As it swims its head bobs back and forth as that of a chicken as it walks. t also has a bill of a chicken. If the Gallinule and her chicks proved of interest so did the appearance of a Rudy Duck . This duck is identifîed with a large white face patch under a dark cap and as well has an uptilted tai. Other ducks at the lagoons included the Blue Wing, Green Winged, Mallard and Scoop. The count included three, species of Terns, the Common, the Black and the Caspian. As to shorebirds the list included Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Lesser, Baird, Pectorial, Spotted and Semi- palmated Sandpipers. A Short- billed Dowitcher drilled away into the muck with a Semi- palmated Ployer making its appearance. Swallows included, Barn, Tree and bank while in the Gul department there were Ring Bis and Bonepartes. Add to this a Common Snipe, Virginia Rail and an abundance of Canada Geese. t is somewhat embarrassing that three-quarters of an hour was spent over the identification of two young starlings flipping Three riders from E{omestead Hills Riding Stables, competed Saturday, July 23rd, at the Knoll Crest Stables in Baltimore, Ontario. Nicole Marrett riding Avenging Angel in the Novice Division placed second in Novice Equitation, second in Novice Pleasure, fourth in Novice Hack and third in Novice Over Fences. In the Low Hunter Division Alex DaCosta riding Top Gun and Avenging Angel, were the Reserved Champions for this division. Jili Cooke riding Top Gun, Rode in the Hunter Division 2'9" placing third in Hunter Over Fences, third in Hunter Over small chunks of debris about on the shoreline. This was more characteristic of the Turnstone species. t is apparent that 1 have neyer taken a good look at the Starling and its offsprings. But the young starling is a good looking bird, a rich brown with a spotted lower body. It was a good lesson for if you don't pay attention you will neyer learn.
