Orono Bantam gi S league champions On Sunday, August 21, 1994 the Orono Bantam girls won al four games in year end tournament hosted by Solina. The first garne the bats were hot and the defence was awesorne. They defeated Solina 21 to 2. In the second gaine Orono had to corne from behind to beat- Roy's Enterprise (Courtice) 9 to 5. In the third game the Orono girls held onto the lead to defeat Courtice 10 to 8. .Orono carne up against Roy's Enterprise for the "A" championship for the final game and the young 9diÇ5 provvd lube at their best. They won by a score of 20to 11. Coach Bester would like to thank the girls for the great effort put forth throughout the day and to congratulate themn on their victory. The players were:- Melissa Allun, Becky Rester, Chrissy Rester, Erica Hawkshaw, Ailan McKenzie, Amy Purroit, Jennifer Purroit, Cindy Ross, Krista Szymczak, Jaime Lynn Wilsdon, Tara Hayward, Kelly Walton, and on vacation was Julie Landers. Happy l6th Birthday Shannon Amana In their final league gaine, the Orono Novice B's were able to field a whole team for the first tinie ini weeks and the resuli was an impressive victory over the Royals i Courtice. Ashley, Katie and Sheilagh ail pitchied well holding the Royals to 8 runs, while their tearn-mates scored 15 for the home side. Lindsay, Sarah, Heather and Jennifer did a fine job patrolling the ouffield, while Amy and Michelle had strong games behind the plate. Meagan made an excellent, unassisied-put out in the second inming and was solid throughout tle gaine ai first base. Congratulations on a fine season, girls and best of luck in the playoffs. 1994 Ontarlo Rodeo finals comine to Orono The besi cowboys and cowgirls from around the province will compete fo r top prize money and tle famed championship gold buckle at the Ontario Rodeo Association 1994 finals. This year's finals will be held at the Durlamr Central Agriculture Society Fairgrounids in Orono the weekend of September 23-25. Sponsored by the Kinsmen and Rotary Clubs of Bowrnanville, the weekend will feature ail of the favourite events that comprise the rodeo. Th-, list of nine events includes: bareback bronc riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, saddle bronc riding, team roping, bull doggin, jr. steer riding, caf roping, and the always-popular and dangerous bull riding. Two shows will be leld on Saturday, September 24 beginning at 1:00 p.rn. and 6:00 p.m. The finals will get underway at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 25. A giant western mnali featuring close to 60 vendors will welcorne visitors to the rodeo. Rides, games of chance, barbecues, and everything from cowboy boots to the latesi in western wear wil be on display. As an added attraction, on Friday and Saturday'night ai 8:00 p.m., a dance featuring top notch country band Wayward will be hield in the "Big Tent". Wayward's exciting stage presence has afforded thein the opportunity to be the opening act for respected country and western artists Michelle Wright, and Ricky Skaggs. The opening act for both Friday and Saîurday niglt's concert wiil be Claser. In preparation to host the Ontario Rodeo Association finals, upgrades have been completed ai the souîh-east corner of the Fair-grounds in Orono. The upgrades are expecîed to enhance one of the mosi popular events to pass through this area. If lasi year's rodeo final held in Courtice is any indication, the site in Orono wiil be a flurry of activity for the entire weekend. ' As part of the Rotary and Kinsmen Clubs' commitment to fundraising for special causes, a portion of the proceeds from the 1994 Rodeo Finals will be donaîed to Cysîic Fibrosis, and disabled children. Throws 'smoke once more Pete "The Hook" Landers now spending spare hours in Orono coaching PeeWee basebaîl has himnself sîepped back on the mound occasionally this year and recently went the distance for the Flying Squirrels in a playoff gaine with Port Perry. Pete has been a real asset for basebal in ihis community as can be seen at the Orono Park as he directs the boys through a practice or i an actual game. It is an educaion for the local boys. Pete Landers is well remembered in the Oshawa area where, as they say, threw smoke. His exploits in fast bail reached far beyond the Oshawa area in the late 60s to the 80s. He earned his spurs whth his incredible fasîbali pitching exploits. Ris followers were pleased to sce him out recentiy, but he has said the kids corne first for him today.
