8 Orono W..klyTlmeuj Wedn.sday~, August 24M 1~94 by Helen MacDonald We forget what a jewel we have in Ottawa. Just under a four hour drive from Orono, our Nation's capital is a place ahl our children should visit. And the trip nleed flot bc an expensive one. Tours of the Parliament buildings are free. Fifty jobs are provided to univeristy students who do Canada proud. Suzanne, our group tour guide, was flot only well-versed on ber histroy of the Nation and its capital, but had excellent rapport with children in the gourp as well as with visitors fro other countries. Amongst our group was a visitor from Poland, a fmily from Somalia, another from Jamaica, another from Virginia, and several from the British Isles. The majority, bowever were Canadians. Suzanne conducted a group election for Prime Minster. Kyle was cheered into office with his promise of elimination of ahl taxes. His cousin, Sarah, was quickly appointed to the position of Deputy Prime Minister (keeping up the tradition of sharing power with family and friends). Nobody seemed to mind . . . well, there was a small minority worried about her tendency towards fickleness in relationships. Neyer mind, tbough, because this baby had proved her loyality to Canada on many occasions. The National Art Gallery is also free, as well as a summer- long programme of outdoor concerts near the Gallery in the afternoons and evenings., Some are specifically geared to children, others family entertainment, and o thers late- night entertainment. .On Parliarnent Hil, at dark, a programme of light, music and voices from Canada's past takes' you on a journey through Canada's history. It is an entertaining introduction to some of our stories. Again, no charge. There are small charges te visit some places such as the Mint where security staff do not allow loonies to leave thebuilding, unaccounted for! Our Nation would be served well if a similar commitment were made to, prevent some from entering other fine Ottawa-based instititutions. The Museum of Civiization is across the river in Hull. Admission is charged to sec more of Canada's history, as well as that of other places around the planet. The totem poles of the Great Hall are 'totally awesome'. Tie best place for children is the Museum of Science and Tcchnology. Here, they can touch things, climb on locomotives, watch chicks hatch, get their thumbs sucked by a milking machine, manipulate computers, cameras, and ... well, it goes on. We were there for five bours and nobody complained about being bored or hungry or tired. And, we didn't see or do it ail!, Places we didn't sec during our four-day visit wer enumerous. Many are free. A lot arc witbin walking distance of Parliament muil. A real thrill for the kids was getting their picture taken with a Mountie (John) and bis beautiful horse,, Trent. They paraded around the Hill the better part of an aftcrnoon, the popular Mountie chatting with visitors, imparting goodwill on behaif of our Nation, posing for photographs which will find their way into family albums ail over the world. For the remainder of our visit, each time he saw a postcard with a Mountie and bis magnificent black horse, Garrett declareti, "Mommy, there's John and Trent!" The last thing we did before leaving the city was walk to 24 Sussex Drive. We peered into the iron gate, wondering ifMr. Chretien might be seen. Instead, there was the gardener, his back turned to us. Bent over, he appearcd to be pulling wceds fro the garden. Or, was he searching for loonies? Don't Forget! The Great Ganaraska Countryside Advcnture takes place this weekend. Tour the living history, and culture in your own backyard. For information, cail 983-9339.
