Champion Fiddlers to visit Orono Fair Fiddle entbusiasts will be surprised and delighted to learn that worid renwnred fiddle teami, Graham and Eleanor Townsend wiil be appearing at the Durham Central Fair as special guests. Mac Ransberry, Chairman of tbe Fiddle Contest reported last, week that he bas ben in contact with Graham at bis home in Barrie about a guest spot at the Old Time Fiddie Contest in the Orono Arena. Mr. Ransberry is very pleased to report thiat Graham and Eleanor will be at the Durham Centrai Pair on September 9tb accompanied by their son, wbo is also in the- entertainmient field. Grahamt Townsend's career- pathi was set when, at the age of eleven, he beat out mnuch older and more experienced fiddle players at the CNE Fiddle Contest. Then hie went on to be the youngest fiddie player to place iýn the top threýe at the North Ameicrican Fîddie Chan)pionýships in Sbelburne, Ontario. He was invited to play for Queen Elizabeth at Parliament Hill for the 1967 Royal Visit and was introduced to the monarcb again in 1982 at tbe Commonwealth Gamnes in Brisbane Australia. Inducted into the North Arnerican Fiddler's Hall of Famne in 1980 and later into tbe Ottawa Valiey Country Music Hall of Famne, Graham more recently (1991) was nominated as Instrumental- Artist of the Year for the Juno Awards. Five time North American Fiddle Champ, Don Messer considered Grabam as bis musical beir. Not to be undone by ber husband, Eleanor Townsend shattered records when after 29 years of maie domination she won the coveted title of Canadian Old Time Fidd-le Champion at the Sheiburne, Ontario Fiddle, Contest. It, was in Sheiburne'at the fiddle contest where she met Graham and later commented "be was my idol long before 1 met bim". She started playing classical fiddle at the age of aine and turned to traditional music at the age of twenty. In 1986 she also was inducted into the North American'Fiddler's Hall of Faine. Wben Graham and Eleanor were invited to open thue Nortbern Arts and Cultural Centre in Yellowknife NWT tbey were greeted like royalty. In 1983 they took the British Isies by'storm wbe n tbey appeared at the International P opular Music Festival' in the Isle of Jersey. Mr. Ransberry would not divulge bis powers of persuasion but did indicate that be bas attended a lot of fiddle contests and met mnany fiddlers over the years. The Durhiamr Central Pair runs fromi Septemnber 8-11 at the Orono Fairgrounds and the Old Time Fiddler's Contest starts at 7 p.m. on September 9. M.P.P. Gordon Milis announced provincial funding for Non-Profit Housing in Durham East of wbicbi one of the projeets would see upwards of 60 non- profit housing units being built in Bowmanville. In announcing the Bowmanvîlie project aiong witb one other the total expenditure would amount to some $9.7 million. In speaking with Counicillor Ann Dreslinski, member of tbe Durham Region Non-Profit Housing Corporation, she said the p roposai had been under consideration for Bowmanville and that it was directed towards senior citizens accommodation. The Durham Region Non- Profit Housing Corporation, over' the past few years, bave completed two oter Non-Profit Housing, projects in Bowmanviile. One is iocated on Concession Street at Mearns Avenue witb tbe other north Liberty S treet. Botb, Mayor Hamre and Councîllor Dreslinski have said that the now vacant site of the former Speciality Paper Product building is a consideration for the location of the recenitly announced non-profit bousing unîts for seniors. The site has been vacant, for the past four to five years. Milîs in bis announcement said "Non-Profit Housing is a cost-efficientway of adding to the supply of affordable housing. He also said that at the present time sucb housing is generating much needed -jobs for the construction industry. It is estimiated that the two projects announced wouid create 216 per years of employment. ThIepresident of Durham Region Non-Profit -Housing Corporation bas said tbat negotiation for a site for the Bowmanville project is on-going. According to Councilior Ann Dreslinski the project is expected to get underway around the end of September and won't be completed until spring of 1995.
