There has been some talk in the media lately about the cost of legal fees to the Town of Clarington. It was reported that the 1992 costs were in the region of five hundred and fifty thousand, dollars. That is a lot of money when an experienced municipal lawyer would be paid less than $100,000 a year. So I decided to ask the Town how much of the public's money, including mine, they had spent in the lasti eighteen months on legal fees. A matter 'of public information. 1 have been informed, after a wait of one month, that this information can only be supplied to me at an estimated cost of $ 150.00. The reason given, that it will take some NINE hours to locate all the charges and add them Up. in this modemn age of computerized accounts that seems an inordinate long period of time. Why so long? Are there so many invoices? By asking for $150.00, from a taxpayer I have to wonder if someone is trying to dissuade me from asking further for this information? Even if I pay the money wîll 1 get the whole truth? Is the Town's accounting and computer system 50o poor that it is not capable of producing this incredible results obtained by the team this past summer as well as having won the 1993 Canada Games. The Ontario Men~s Team went to Cuba where they defeated the Cuban Juvenile National tearn three times, and then went undefeated at the National Team Challenge Cup (NTCC) in Sherbrooke, Quebec to win the Eastern Canadian Chanipionships. The Ontario team trained at the Madawaska Volleyball Camp near Bancroft and then departed to Puerto Rico on Wedniesday, August 24, 1994. The team will come back on September 2 at 10:00 p.m. information upon pressing a few buttons? Could these multiple legal cosus be so buried between the different departments such as Planning, subdivision agreements, By-Law, Public Works, 0MB hearings, -Hydro, Eldorado and Garbage dumps etc. that no on e really knows or for that matter wants to know the Ireal costs of these legal charges? I have to wonder even if the Coundil has seen these numbers. One thing I do understand is that half a million dollars would go a long way to improving a few baîl diamonds for one example or funding a kids or seniors drop in centre rather than financing Bay Street lawyers. This is most perplexing. Yours faithfully, Ann Cowman, Clarington To accept Durham Scholarship Augusto Duquesne-Palaico, 26, a six foot six inch forward for the Cuban basketball teami that was in competition ini a basketball tournament in Canada i s to accept one of 28 athletic scholarships that are offered at Durham College.
