I went reiuctantly because inMy mind it just didn't measure up to the exciting big fair 1 was used to --the CNE. Now, 20 years later, content living a quiet, rural life, I can say that I amn a covert of the country fail fair. And, I'm flot the oniy one. Each year for the last 142 years, the Durharn Central Agricultural Sociey sponsors what we cali the Orono Fair, drawing thousands of people to the fairgrounds. People from our own community, people from outlying areas and some urban people looking for a fair in a small town comne to Orono for the fun and atmosphere found only a: a country fail fair. Aiso, they corne because it is a gian: social occasion where neighbours near and far meet, share a few anecdotes, discuss this years' growing season or politics or sirnply enjoy the exchanges of nods and smiies. 1From the trne the gates open to the public tomorrow afternoon miniature canoes and ladies using 100 year old tois. About eight years ago, Menzies began his hobby by first building his shavehorse. lie couldn't find a pattern, s0 modeiied it from pictures in oid catalogues. a: 4:30, 'tIi they close rnid- afternoon Sunday, there is no shortage of things to see and do. The Officiai Opening Cerernonies commence Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. followed by the Ambassador of the Fair Pageant with Entertainment by Warren Sutciiffe at 7: 10 p.m. If it's the thriii of the automobile teased onto its side wheels, or jumping off a piatform, you won't want to miss the Hell Drivers performance at 8:00 p.m., Ail day Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you can enjoy the wide variety of agricuiturai projects cornpieted by eiementary schooi chiidren and rnany crafts such as woodworking, needlecraft, flower arranging, art and more. The Mane Attraction Petting Zoo is a fun opportunity for chiidren to connect with animais they might have only read about in their storybooks. One of the most recent attractions added to the Fair are the Piglet Races sponsored by the Orono Town Hall -Board. Rich and fiavourful, tomatoes offer one ofthe best warm weather tastes, and are now ready to be picked. Field tomatoes have become a favourite, whether they are eaten raw with a sprinkie of sait and pepper, tossed in a salad, or cooked in a main course dish. Ontario Field tomates corne in three varieties: "Round" are orange-red to deep red in colour and have a firmn succulent flesh; "Plum" are smailer than Round, have a deep red colour and are shaped like a pear; "Cherry" possess an intenseflavour and fragrance, are the size of a child's has it that they have been named - - ail wiil be reveaied in the pre- election races which will be heid every 30 minutes. There wiil aiso be antique tractors on dispiay and in demonstration throughout the weekend. Friday is a special day for school chiidren who will parade through the streets of Orono at 1:00 p.rn. Some will participate in the School Talent Contest at 3:00 p.m. othersïii 'enter the Spelling Bee at 6:00 p.m., whiie others may be showing their iivestock throughout the day. A popular event is the Prize Cake Auction to be heid at 6:30 p.m., Friday. During an election year, such as we are in, this event usually draws an eiectric crowd of bidders intent upon out-bidding their opposition -- a kind of pré- election taste of the fruits of success. -And, for the loyers of fiddie music, the Old Time Fiddier's Contest is held Friday at 8:00 p.m., foiiowed by the Tug-of-War at 9:00 p.m. Then, it's midway time! Saturday morning, the parade forms at the Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. It wiil arrive at 12:00 noon at the Fairgrounds. Foiiowing the parade, antique thrashing machine demonstrations will be conducted on the hour 'tii 5:00 p.m. In the meantime, the horse competitions will begin at 11:00 a.m. The Talent Show, with the Mundelis, is being heid at 1:30 p.m. At 8:30 p.rn. the "Battie of the Bands" will take place, followed a: 9:00 by the Fair Dance featuring "Chaser", in die arena. Sunday at 9:00 a.m. rabbit judging begins as weli as the Hunter Show. At 10:00 remote R.C. car and truck races commence, and 12:45 is the annual Gospel Sing with Bowmanviiie Ministeriai Association. Harness racing (10 heats, para mutuai wagering) takes place a: 1:30 p.m. and the Country & Western Jamboree begins at 2:30 p.nl. This is a taste of the things to do at the Annual Orono Fair this weekend. Sec you there! marbie and have a brilliant red colour. Ripe tommtes should be used within three days. Do not refrigerate tomates, as this may iead to iossof flavour and texture. Underripe tomatoes can be ripened by piacing them in a brown paper bag aiong with an appie or a pear, which releases ethylene gas and wil speed up the ripening process. Tomatoes should be rinsed and drained before using. To peel: cut an "X" in the base, loosen the skin by plunging it into boiling water for 30 seconds, submerge in cold water, then gentiy peel. To seed: haive e ach tomato crosswise, then gently squee ize, with cut side down, over a sieve- topped bowi. When siicing a tomato, cut from top to bottom (stem end to its opposite).
