After both teais faihed ta score in d'e first inning, Orono broke on top ta take a 1 ta nothing lead after two innings. They really broke it open, hawever, in d'e third and fourth innings. sending 10 batters W d'he plate in each of d'ose innings and caasting Wo a 12 Wo 2 victary. That qualified d'e girls far the Championship semi-final where their appanents were the Blue Jays. The Jays had finished with more than twice the number of wins the Orono squad had had in the regular seasan, but d'e "B's" were undaunted as they took d'e field in the heat of the aftemaaon. Dawn 4 Wo 2 after dhe first inning, things did nat look good for the Orona girls but they battled back with somesolid hitting, tight defense and great pitching. It was 7 to 6 at d'e end of two, and 10 ta 6 when the Orono girls came ta Lasi ThursdaY, 1 was aSked by Ernie Harvey of the Rotary Club, Bowmanville, to spcak ta their members on the subject of the future of organized labour. I must tell you that at first 1 thought why this subject? Couldn't they have pîcked something better? And then as 1 thought about it I decided that perhaps it would be the right subject for we are surely living in a changing society. As 1 gave thought to what 1 would say 1 couldn't help but think how the C.A.W. has tumed their back on the N.D.. t made me think there's a strange sîckness sweeping the ranks of som-e unions in Ontario. It seems as if the Social Contract is the cause seen W be enough ta trash the NDP. You would think it ta be the worst strategy ever devised. I mean, take a few days off 'but you get ta keep, your job, you get paid all the tîme. As I wrote myspeech out in draft form 1 couldn't help but think of al those employed at Confederation Life Assurance Company, some with many years of service. The mortgages they held, the future of their children and their education, holîdays together, Christmas and perhaps even Florida in future plans. Dreams al dashed. These people were not asked if they wanted ta share the pain so their fellow emplayees could keep their jobs. They were told their jobs were eliminated, history, gone for goad. 1 don't think you would have had ta ask any of those Confederation Life emplayees twice had they been employed in the public sectar, who wouldn't have agreed ta take a few days off without pay and Wo put their collective agreement on hold provided they held on ta their job. Last week, I read that the C.A.W. were not even gaing ta offer any assistance ta three NDP MPPs of their own. membership, Pat Hayes, Randy Hope and Larry O'Conner,' in the up-caming provincial election because ahl three voted in favour of the Social Contract. I ask you, just how petty caný anyane be? If the C.A.W. truly believe that the ather main-line palitical parties, bat in what was ta be the hast inning. The top of the order scored four turnes ta tie the game at 10 and they then held the Jays scoreless to force extra innings. The solid pitching and defense continued as the mighty ten battled, fatigue, and the heat as well as the Blue jays W hold themn scoreless in bath f the fifth and sixth innings, but with 1 out in the seventh the Jays farced in a run and won the gaine 11-10. Congratulations ta Katie, Michelle, Ashhey, Jennifer, Sarah, Sheila, Amy, Meagan, Lindsay and Heather on a great seasan and an exceptianal taurnament. Coach Bob looks>forward ta having you ail back, in uniform next season. A special thanks toalal the parents who helped out this year umpiring, sconing and getting the girls ta practices and gaines, you support was really appreciated. under Mike Harris or Lyn Mecod are going ta do more for labour than the NDP then for sure they must have stood out in the sun ta long. Mike Harris is on the record ta dismantle Bihl 40 shauld he formn the government in 1995, and the Liberals have suggested they wilh gut the legislation tao. This anti- scab legislatian is something arganized labour has been fighting ta get for years! The NDP Govemment has also taken a number of heahth & safety initiatives, nat tW mention a wage protections fund for warkers whose campanies have closed and left themn high and dry. The NDP was founded as a partners hip between arganîzed labour and the old rural based C.C.P. Now it seems that the C.A.W. is rapidly discarding al its links with the NDP, and they don't seem to have any further use for us. I, know the collective agreement is the sacred cow in al of this. Perhaps we have barbecued it a bit but honestly was there any alternative? At the end of this week, I wil be heading off to England for a few days. It's a trip Id rather not be taking, but some of our relatives are getting along in years and are not very well along with it. I arn blessed with first- class support staff members both here in Bowmanviile and in Toronto. During my absence you can count on all of your needs' being looked after just as well as if I was present.
