4 - Orono Weekly Tinies, Wedneuday, October 5, 1994 ) Orono Atom Leafs take to the ice against Professional hockey may be on hold for the next two weeks or perhaps for the entire season but hockey is alive and weli in Orono as the Orono Atom Leafs sponsored by the Donut Gallery took to the ice last Friday evening. The opposition for the first exhibition game of the season was the Oshawa Little' NHL Red Wings. Orono came out strong and showed good potential for the year ahead as they took control of the game in the first period. Despite their strong play, neither tearn was able to score umil early in the second period when Justin Standeven picked up a loose puck behind the Oshawa net and passed out front to Jamie Rowe who made no mistake to beat the Ohawa Oshawa, goalie cleanly. The balance of the period was fairly even but Uic Red Wings managed to score twice to take a one goal lead into ic third. It was in Uis period that the wheels feUi off ic Orono machine as a combination of frustration and a lack of eanly season conditioning allowed Oshawa to score four late unanswered goals to skate to a six to one victory. This first gamne of Uic year proved the Orono team 'to bc one with potential but also identified several areas that the coaching staff wifl have to work on for Uic teamn t live up to Uis potentiai. This Friday evening marks Uic stat of thc regular league play as Orono hosts Newcastle at 8:00 P.m. The pace being fast for Uic stat of Uic year, Newcastle scored on a well deserved second goal near the end of the second period. Orono didn't get on the scoreboard until Uic Uird period when Justin Szymczak scored unassisted at the 5:33 mark. Seconds laten Jeff Mercier pounded two goals into thc net wo give Orono the lead. Bryan Bickeil and Matt Caruana assisted on the first by a couple of nice passes. The second taken from centre ice by Matt Caruana right onto the stick of Uic ready Jeff Mercier.
