In total there were 65 nominations with 17 from Ward 1, 25 from Ward 2 and 21 from Ward Three. Judging of the gardens was undertaken by members from the three local Horticultural Societiesy, along with Nick VanSegglen representing the Municipality. .Dave Hinton of the Orono Society conducted the program of events calling upon Mayor Hamre to present the winning awards of, the three categories. AIl was quiet in the sky at Whitby Hawk-Watch The attraction for a lot of birders over the past week-end was the hawk-watch lookout at Cranberry Marsh just off Hall's Road. In fact thfe piatform was somewhat crowded at times as birders looked to the east for so aring hawks, eagles and vultures. Bll Bunting and I thought it would bc a good day with hawks on the move. The sun was shining brightIy, clear sky and a slight breeze out of the north to push the hawks south to the lakefront. Just to get one statistic out of the way which comes from the group organizing the maning of the look-out the high one-day record bas been 853 raptors in migration from east to west. .Now as to Sunday, for one and haf hours, there was little action and what action there was was in the distance. There was nlo way that even the most knowledgeable birders in the crowd could make a positive identification of the birds other than the classification of accipter, buteo or falcon. Just before leaving however eighteen Turkey Vultures flew overhead an easy ID _and these eigyý_ i were soon followed by a furthertwelve. It was easy to see that the birds were. soaring off a thermal and when further west were looking for a further thermal to'gain altitude for further travel west. For some reason or another the hawks were just flot on the move in any great numbers. .Frost 'did exist Sunday momning and it is possible that the land had flot warmed enougli to produce definite rising thermals, of warm air. This could have changed later in the day. There was a lot of movement of Monarch Butterfiies' at Cranberry Marsh and a number of times you would pick one up inl your binoculars and have to take a few seconds to determine if it was a hawk or flot. They were waiting Over the past few-,weeks we have flot seen that many birds around the house. That has al changed with the placement of two bird feeders, one with smnall Sunflower seeds and the other with Niger seed. Certainly the Gold Finch have a preference for the Niger seed while the House Finch have been making do with the Sunflower seeds. The word soon spread for there is a host of birds taking advantage of the offerings. Holds approval of development plan Whitby council by a majority vote has heldup final approval of a major residential development in the south of themunicipality next to the boundaries of the Lynde Shores marsh. 'Me move by the majority of council surprised the developer and the province who spoke in support of the plan. The plan will bring .5000 residents to the area. The Region of Durham expects property on the north side of the road will be used in the future for' industry.
