mumm4-2 Orono WeektyT-imes, Wednesday, October 26,1994 Good News Indeed The announcement on Monday regarding the development of a Cancer Treatment Centre in Oshawa is good news indeed. It bas been anticipated especially over the past year and now it has become a fact with the word of Premier Bob Rac. The province is providing funding in the amount of $25 million as it is also for a similar dcvelopment west of Metro in Oakville. The Oshawa centre wil provide easy access for the growing number of cancerpatients from Durham and other parts of thc province, north and east. 'Me Centre is estimatcd to be available for operation within five years and in Uic first year wil treat some 3000 patients. The move by the Rae government has made available this service in a more convenient manner dmhabas been available in the past. A further step to Uic future. There need be no threats Over the past years the the business sector has been calling for drastic cuts in social programn in an effort to reduce the ever increasing deficit. The business sector bas been adamant How intcrcsting over Uic past week when Uic governiment gave an indication that sorne trimmring could be undertaken in Unemployment Insurance that would affect the operations of Uic automobile industry and their employees who do collccî insurance when Uic plants are closed on a regular annual retooling. GM was quick b umraen Uiat such action by Uic government could be cause for loss of Canadian investrnent by Uic industry and more galli ng it is pointed out that the industry pays more into Unemployment Insurance than it gets out. A dog in Uic manger attitude. UI was neyer intended to balance ont premiums with payouts. It has been notcd by an industry analyst that UI is a minor factor in dcciding where to invest. Perhaps Uic auto industry would like to balance out medical coverage in Ontario that saves $1000.00 for eacb car built in Canada over that in Uic U.S. Disappointed in our good corporate citizens. Kendal Column 1by Phyllis Lowery Warning 10 ail local people, we scem to have been invadcd by somne pretty weird looking criters. You may sec thcm floating from Uic trees or caves, some are sitting in your lawn chairs or Icaning up against your walls. I even saw one sitting on a tractor. Somei are ail white and some have orange heads, are Uiey frorn outer space or couid Halloween be jusb around the corner? Watch for more of these critters 500f. The Kendai arca are baving water problcms Ibis year, that is lack of watcr, wells are going dry, we neyer realize just how mucb water we use every day and how wc dcpend on it, until we run out of it. Let's hope this situation soon gets better. It was a vcry cold winter, with not as much snow as usual and a vcry dry summer and faîl. Sunday, Kendal United Church cclcbrated their 124th year of service in this lovcly littie church. We have our ancesbors 10 îbank for this building, and we thank those who are presently supporting it but young people are need as well for it to continue 10 serve Uic area. It seems thal in this day and age our young people don'î have Uic time to attend, they are so busy seeing that the children get to their basebali and hockey games that there isn't any time left for learning about God. It can not bc taught in schools, religion is banned there, it might offend someone of a different faith. Where will the future generations learn about Uic birth and lîfe and Uic death of Jesus? Surely 1 bour a week could bc set aside for church, who knows you might really enjoy it. It was a pleasure to sec so many out 10 church on Sunday, we had many visitors. Rev. Black welcomed ail, Uic opening hymn was, "On This Day 0f Celebration". The Invitation to Worship and the Prayer of Approach repeated. The hymn, "Holy, Holy, Holy" was sung. Ian Savage led in ic Prayer of Seif-Examination and gave the Words of Assurance. Ian introduced the guesb speaker, Rev. David McDonald. Rev. McDonald said that il made him feel good tobe wanted back to speak to us, to take part in the celebration of the cburch's 124tb Anniversary. He was pleased Uiat bis first ta sk was to cali Uic children forward and tell Uiem a story. He asked Uiem if they knew what Uic word faith meant? He told Uiem Uiat, "FaiUi means, being sure of what we hope for and certain of wbat we do not sec." David brought out a littie child's chair and asked them if Uiey Uioughb it was safe for him 10 sit on il? They ail said yes, he asked Uicm why they Uiought Uis, but no one answered. He startcd 10 sit down but jumped up and said what if it breaks, Uiey didn't Uink il would, so he started to sit down again but stood up and said that be couldn't sec il, what if someone bad moved il, thcy assured hlm that it was stili there. Carefully he sat down and- then he told bhem that this was, Faith. FaiUi for what you hope for and certain of what you cannol sec . The children's hymn was, "This Little Light of MiGne." 'Me Bender faiiy provided us with special music. Mr. Bender said that an Anniversary means, someone has walked this way before us. Their first song was, "Ail My Tomorrows, Ail My Past," followed by "Jesus Is Lord 0f Ail," "Remind Me Dear Lord," and "Sheltercd In The Arms 0f God." Rev. McDonaid read from Joshua 3: 1-7. The sermon was titled, ,,Vemuring Into the Unknown". Rev. McDonald said as Uis is tbc 124th Anniversary, il is a In a letter to Walt Whitman it was written, you are celebrating 70 years of life, "you bave just witnessed an exceptional 70 years but you have greater things to corne.11 The Israelites had corne to Uic banks of Uic mighty river Jordan, their leader Moses was dead, Uiey had a new younger leader, Joshua. They are standing on Uic threshold of the promised land, but, Uic future is unknown. Our church is also facing Uic unknown, will it continue to serve Uic people, can it remnain bere or will another take ils place. Perhaps it is a good thing that we don't know what Uic future holds, The Israelites were tbld to follow Uic ark of the covenant, but to stay well back. God had bold them how to make Uic ark. He gave them the exact measurements, by following the ark they were following God. It would lead them to a ncw place, God would lcad Uiemi to this new place. God uses the words, follow Me, many places in the Bible. Jesus said bo Simon and Peter, follow Me and I will make you fishers of men. If we follow God, His presence wiil be with us and He will lead us. The Israelites were told to follow, but îo be cautious, bhey were told to be patient and consecrate Uemselves. We must also bc cautious and patient. We must face our future wîth patience. Now is a time to check where we are, to prepare ourselves for what is bo corne. We must ask ourselves what we must do, as we face Uic future of tbis church? We must bc patient, we must consecrate ourselves and face Uic future with courage and confidence, knowing God is by our side. The Bender family then sang, "What A Day That Wîll Be," "There Is A Saviour," "Memories 0f Wbat Was Today," "We Have This Moment Today." Ian gave thc Prayer of Thankfulness and the Prayer of Concern and Commitment. The closing hymn was, "We Build A New Tomormow." Following the service everyonc went mbt the Sunday SSchool roorn for a delicious lunch ORONO, ONTARIO andi a great tune of visitîng. Don't forget that on this coming Saturday, the church is sponsoring a "Ham Supper", aduits $8.00, children $4.00, pre- sehoolers free. Serving 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. If you don't bave a ticket, don't worry you can just pay admission at the door. What is that ad on t.v. "The food is always good here." Meditation . .. "Reernbering the past should bc a springboard,. flot a hammock." Another saying that camne to my mnd was written In a birthday book of a friend, " Th e past is like building a foundation, the future is the building you build on it.
