Orono eekIyhnes~ Wed.sdayO.to........4- Prepares for another election campaign Digne Harnre, incunibent Mayor of the Municipality of Clarington, rallied with bier teani of supporters and workers on Saturday along witli the opening of lier campaign office in Bowmanville. Mrs. Hantre lias been in local municipal office for the past 14 years with the last tliree years as Mayor. It can 110W be told I have been siuting on this story for almost four years and there is a perfectly good reason. I didn't want te bc put off the road just because the car didn't have reverse. After all it always seemed to make good sense to go straiglit forward in whatever endeavour one attempts. Straiglit forward, was indeed the only direction I could go especially after the transmission wammed up. 1But with time you adjust and and become adept atf coping witli problems and inconvenience that could happen without reverse. I have learned all the tricks of the trade leven thougli at' times I may have had te drive around the block a couple of times te find a parking space. It had to slope down at the back or it liad to be one I could drive'into and then drive out. in some cases it could become quite complicated as driving up a bit of, a hl and then letting the car roll back into the parking space. 1 did get caught a couple of tâmes on a dead-end street but on these occasions I had Bill Bunting as a passenger. Sliortly after lie refused te drive with me. 'he biggest embarrassment came when a flagman on Number Two highway at the Town Line stepped me and asked me td back up to allow a gravel truck through. "l'ut sonry I don't have reverse can you not let me go titrougli first". He came over to the car and questioned the fact I didn't have - She is contesting the position this -year witli challengers Mrs. Anti Cowman, Courtice and Reg Willat of Bowmanville. Mrs. Hamre said that lier election teamn is back again and that it makes lier feel good for such support. "Wewill mun a positive reverse. Putting the car in reverse proved my point and sliaking his liead he flagged me on. 1 came home by Taunton Road. But the fact I didn't have reverse didn't hinder me driving into the centre of Toronto to attend some of the plays. The first experience going underground at the new Ed Mirvish Prince of Wales theatre was cause for some concem but it was a breeze. The one I like best however is parking on a skimpy lot just over the curb south of the O'Keefe Centre. ',There was no problern getting tue car in and in fact 1 must have been the last car to do so. 1On leaving the attendant said leave me your keys I might have te move your car. "Oh Yea"" But I did leave the keys. On returning hours later I found that indeed the car had been moved to the other end of the lot. I had to wonder what ind of a reception I was going to get from the attendant. 1"Do you have a problem.with reverse?" "No I don't for the simple fact that I don't have reverse so there is no problem". l'il give you a push te get'you out of here". It was good for a laugh for Set itpf o camnpaign", slicesaid., Speaking of tlie last three years she said a lot lias been accomplished and especaiily througli partnership witlitlie other two levels of govenment. Slie said Clarington was ready and was able to take advantage of the partnersliip prograins.
