Long days. Even longer nigbts. Diapers--crying. Cuts, falîs, scrapes, boo-boos--- crying. Sibling rivalry --- crying. Peer pressure --- crying. Hunger, illness, fever --- crying. And the most retching, choking, gagging, nauseating job of ai.. . vomit--- crying. The October Plague bas descended upon our community. It's a sharing disease. First, a couple of cbildren at sehool cough, wheeze and sniffle the day away. Then, suddenly, one rushes out of the classroom to bave a conversation with the great white telephone in the bathroom. The plague is in motion. The next 100 kids into the bathroom forget to wash their hands wben they leave *... like the one who threw Up. The germs travel from badiroom to classroom to bus and-finally home to kitchen, bathroom and television knob. It is rampant. This is how it is with the. October Sharing Plague. -But, have you ever noticed that moms don't get it right away. We bave been blessed with a genctie code which reads lie a vow: "Mom remains healthy to care for the sick and their messes." Aware of this code, I have tried to instili inte my children a basic understanding of the skill of vomiting. Why? How many beds, floors,, walls and other pieces of fumniture and knick-knacks have you had to r id of chunky, smelly stuif at 3:00 in the morning? It begmns with a weak-plea that filters into your sleep, interrupting your fantasies. "Mom . .. mom ...1thinkl'm going to bc sick!" You jump out of bcd as if your body is on fire (well, it was, but.- . .). You rmn to the aid of your whimpering child, hoping they remnember the drili. lst step: Cal Mom. 2nd Step: Mom comes to rescue. 3rd Step: Do flot vomit 'til arrival at toilet bowl. You grab the child like a football and rush to the bathroomn. As you travel you remind yourself: "Toilet lid UP, UP, UP". You make it. Holding a limp cbild/in your hands, instructing them ta kneel before the bowl, they reward your speed and skill by aiming well. BLACH! Flushshshsh. You wipe off the rainbow drool, and tell them, "Good Job. Doesn't that feel better?" "I'm sorry, mommy, I'm just not feling too weil." "That's okay," you tell them. OKAY???? Sure, it's a blast! It's 3:00 a.m., and wbat else could 1 possibly want to be doing at this time, anyway? This is the child you have trained well. This child knows bow to recognize the signals warning of the impending retching of dinner .. . even in is/ber sleep. Another child does flot. Instead he/sheshows up at your bedside in the dark of night (even before he speaks, you sense his presence). "Mom, 1 threw up ail over the place!" TMis time, you don't jump out of bcd. You try very bard to put on a sympathetic smile. "That's okay. We'Il get you cleaned off." You hope that they at least had the decency to keep the projection ON thc bcd alone! You guide your shivering, scared, embarrassed child into the showcr. You then, begin the task of assessing the damage ini bis/ber room. You are pleased to discover that only the bed needs cleaning. You take the sheets to the laundry room, rinse off the chunky bits, and throw everything into the washing machine. You tuck your child into your bed, and then make yourself a nice cup of bot chocolate and settle on the coucb with a book. You might get some More sleep. Early the next morning, Ontario Hydro is banging on your door. 'We can't have people ranning appliances Iduring the night. It puts too much stress on our nuclear generating stations." "Sure,' no problem. I understand about nighttime stres."
