Ornowelly Times, Wednesday, November 2,1994 - 3 The choice of YMCA in Orillia for our recent govemment retreat must have been someone's idea of "getting even" with us ail. The first joke to surface up there was te report te reception that the TV had been stolen front the' room. 0f course there wasn't any TV in any room, neither did any roomn have,a telephone. Ail of which I suppose doesn't matter much in blazing July but ini rainy cool dark October it takes on a different perspective. altogether. Talk about going back te basies! During one of our plenary sessions 1 gave a rather pas sionate speech about the'neéd te extend public transportation by the government, into tbe smaller towns and villages through out the riding. Ln my opinion long- termi reformn must also address the transport needs to rural and smali towns and hamiets for complete success. 1 found it ail very 'Weil to g o on at length about the various sub-way extensions in Metro Toronto, ahl the while paying no attention to the transport problems faced in our riding. 1 hope the message sunk in somewhere. 1 did notice the- Premier making some notes as 1 spoke. In one-on-one situations, I was 011e to bring forward several- ~Ai conccrns to the applicable minister. I had a geod discussion with the Minster of Natural Resources about concerrus over the Brooklin Hunt Club, the Oak Ridges Moraine, and thc road side gravel and sand extractions policy. 1 had a lengthy talk with the Minîster of Health ever local health concerns. 1 feel a bit bad about -my grumbling te the Minister, because after I had blastcd away about miany things, shte reached out, put lier hands ont my shoulders, and told me that' cancer radiatio n therapy was coming te Oshawa General Hospital. It was another one of those situations - and we ail have themn - whcn you wished you had been nicer to someone.- -When tic Ontario Govemnment was forced to reduce the tax on tobacco and cigarettes Uic tax loss was estimated te bc $500 million. The latest tobacco and cigarettes tax revenue figures show thc ioss to now be $528 million. aise, the federal U.I.C. reductions now in place have cost the Province of Ontario over $100 'million more in social assistance costs this year. The cuts that are te corne from the federal Liberals will only add to Ontario's preblems. The Liberals already owe the Province of Ontario over $8- billion in defaulted transfer payrnents. The great news of the past week was of course the announcement by Uic Premier and Minister of HeaIUi on Monday te provide funding in Uic amount of $35.6 million for a Cemmunity Cancer Treatment Centre at Oshawa Gencral Hospital. Radiation therapy is somethîng I have worked bard te get in our community, aleng with the members of the Citizens for a Cancer Centre Team. On 'Monday we were aIl arnazed at Uic specd of progress made in bringing this dreain ferward in less than eight months. Once the Cancer Centre is completcd, cancer patients frorn ail over the riding, and beyond, will no longer face the added trauma of travel to Toronto, Kingston and even as far away as Sudbury for treatmicnt. t was a great day, with s50 many people filledl with a levcl of joy that The Three Missing Words 1Ilhad a number of enquires as to the Around Home article of last week. They were ail directed to the fact that the story had been Cnt off and there was no ending. On reading the article as printed it was indeed a fact - fthec words were missing from the end of the last paragraph which shouid bave read - "It was a good iaugh for 1 b..QLIius. As te the car it went in a deal with a purchase of 'a 1994 Mercury Topaz. Mind you there wasn't much money invoived but the car was off our hands. Our reiationship with Marigoid Ford in Whitby goes back to 1990 when another new car was being sought. The new car was te be either a GM produet or a Ford and we did take so rne te look at the new offerings of the day. Prices in this area were quite similar for the saine type of car. We had not only visited lots but also made phone cails to area dealers asking the end cost of certain makes of cars. The Mercury Topaz was one such model and ail dealers had the samne price. But then we saw an advertisement in the Toronto Star offering a 1990 Topaz for some $i,000less thanany price locaJly. On phoning Marigold Ford and pointing out the Toronto price Jack Cook, the salesperson, s aid hie had the ad in front of him and that the boss said hie could seil for the saine price on this day oniy but we had only two hours left to make the purchase at that pnice. It was a quick trip te Whitby. would bc hard to repeat. t makes you feel good. Our goverument-has confirmed its long standing commitmnent to the Ontario Corn Producers' Association through an agreement that secures for 15 years the 14.7 cent per litre provincial road tax exemption for ethanol. The development of the ethanol industry in Ontario will provide jobs and investment in rural communities, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions and improving energy efficiencies. This new local market for over 20 million bushels of Ontario corn hias boggcd down because of the refusal of the federai govemment to'exempt thecir 8.5-cent per litre tax for ethanol. Their position is thwarting a boost to the rural economy ,which couid.be lost due to the actions of the federal Liberais. The Government of Ontario bas already announced $5 million in infrastructure funding to support a $170 million world- scale ethanol plant in Chatham, Ontario. Do you recall as a child being told that te share with others one gets much more in return? What has gone wrong? See you next week. When it came te a new car this time around it almost bad to be a Topaz again advertising $2000.00 off which likely was added prior to the reduction, and a further $500 Customer Appreciation certificate if purchasing the sanie model as iast time and some credits at Ford through the CIBC VISA card. Again it was a caîl te Jack Cook who apparentiy neyer forgets a customner and workine out the end price pointed out the 1994 model was costing a few dollars less tban the 1990 model. What about taking the Hyundai, 1986? No reverse, a hole in the gas tank, slow moving windshield wipers and rust spots. t is parked in your parking lot where it will bave te be towed out. This called for a conference with the boss. On returning- Jack said, "$25.00" "L'il.take it". At this point Jim Souchs son came te the door asking about the trade-in price of $25.00. "He took it" So that was the end te driving without reverse and Bill Bunting now bas confidence enough te be a passenger in my car.
