The Leafs looked tired after a PA day in which they beld a momning workout and spent the early evening working on a fundraiser for the tcam. This proved too mucb as Omemee skated to an easy 6 to 0 win over Orono. Sunday morning at 7:00 it was a different Leaf teain that took to the ice to face their arch rivais from Newcastle in that teains annual tournament. Orono was-on top of the opposition.froin the opening faceoff anddespite outsbooting Newcastle, managed only a 3 to 3 tie after regulation play witb the tic breaker to be dccidcd with a shootout. Matt Reid and Jamie Rowc both scorcd for Orono in the first round of thc shoot out on their last two shots 'ro end it deadlocked at two goals apiece. With a trip to the "A" side of the tourncy at stake the pressure on players and fans alike increased as the outcome would now bc decidcd in a sudden deatb shoot out reminiscent of Canada's recent Olympic teain. Both teains wcrc stymied by strong goaltcnding with Glencoc Hogle manning the pipes for Orono until the tenth shooter took the puck froin centre ice. Kyle Moore proved to be the bero for Orono as he beat the Newcastle goalie cleanly to give Orono a wcll deservcd 4-3 overtime victory. SUMMARY First Period 1. Castellano, Boyd The aggressivcness that Orono bad in the opcning gaine just wasn't there in their second gaine against a very much bigger Major Atoin Oshawa Grapevine. Two goals against thein early in the gaine seemed to deflate the Leafs wbo couldn't get back in thc game after dhat point. Orono could oniy manage one third peniod goal off the stick of Jcff Tbompson assisted by Scott Webb. Oshawa advanccd to the "A" final witb their 7 to 1 victory. Orono went to the "B" cbampionship against another strong teain froin Bancroft. Once more strong goaltending by Josh Brandt bcld Orono in the gaine early aflowing just one goal in bis haîf of thc gaine until thc Leafs found their skating legs. The, Leafs battlcd back froin a two goal deficit to tic thc gaine in Uic last minute to force suddcn dcatb overtime. Glcncoc Hogle once more found himseif in Uic bot seat bctween Uic pipes in Uic sudden deatb situation. Bancroft prevailed witb just over one minute lcft in thc overtime to take the cbampionship. Orono can be proud. of their performance as they proved to themnsclves and their fans that tbey can play witb the bcst teains in the area and win if they play up to tber potential. Congratulations to Matt Reid on being named the tournamnent MVP for Orono. Good work Matt. SUMMARY First Period - No scoring Second Pcriod 1. Bancroft, Huszarik (Brown) 8:57 Third Period 2. Bancroft, Joncs (Kemp) 1: 17 The Orono Donut Gallery Atom Leafs came down to eartb witb a thud Wednesday night in Millbrook from the high that they bad at thc Newcastle tournament the preccding Sunday. Only one or two boys had the jump that was rcquircd to keep up to the Mýillbrook tearn and by the end of the gaine everyone on the bench knew that they had not put forward their best effort as tbcy came up short on the end of a 6 to 1 score. Mark Brennan was the only Orono shooter to beat the Millbrook goalie as he bankcd one in off a defenseman for an unassistcd goal. Friday night in Orono was a rnucb different story as evcryone came witb their gaine face on and tbey battled a good Sunderland teain to a 3 to 3 tic. Orono feui behind by two goals by thc end of the first pcriod but neyer gave up scoring early -in the second to boost their moraie and keep thein going.
