He said that it was not necessary for Part Hope ta agree ta take waste fram either Hape Tawnship ar Clarington. It was said that a cavern up ta 600,000 cubic metres could accept waste from ail three centres and could bc lacated in a Part Hope site. Northumberland Group critical of Grade Members of the Northum- berland Chapter of Parents in Action has cast their doubts an the rosy picture being painted by sehool administrators and trustees as to the resuits of the reading and writing tests recently announced by most school boards. Members of the Chapter have joined Premier Bob Rae in expressing doubts about bath the validity of the Grade 9,-testing and the standards that students met. Premier Rae immediately after the announcement of the tests called the standards that the students met lamentably low and one that every student could pass. He said under the circumstances the exercise was pointless. A Part Hope resident and member of the chapter has stated that the tests are not telling the whole stary and that it is frustrating ta hear trustees saying that the tests prove that everything is wonderful in the schools when parent know they are nat. 9 testing According ta the report the local public board students bettered the provincial median while the separate school board was slightly under the mredian. Members of the chapter agreed ,__, with an independent researcher at the -University of Western Ontario who pegged the tests given ta the Grade 9 students at a degree of difficulty of between 6.8 and 7.8. Somne of the group were critical of the loase manner in which the tests were held where students were even allowed ta take parts of the tests home ta discuss with others. As a resuit they cail the scores skewed. Such action was called cheating in the words of one member. The Northumberland group, Parents In Action is under the umbrella of the Toronto-based Coalition For Education Reform. The umbrella group has a membership of 10,000 in its member arganizations.
