Oroýýno WeeýkyTimýes, Wecfnesd ayNvebr23, 1994 - Il ý Take part in Harrier competition Pictured above are the students of Orono Public Scbool who participated in the Hardier event this year: Peter Etmanskie, Matt Reid, Justin Standeven, Johnny Halik, Mark Brennan, Eryn McGlynn, D.J. Borremans, A couple af weeks ago 1 picked up my marning Star and, along with many readers of this Canadian daily newspaper, found myself -canfronted with the horrific image of a Canadian saldier standing over bis bloadied ananymous Somali victim. Someone deemed that this image was front-page material. My first impulse was that af revulsion as the photo stared at me from the breakfast table. 1 suddenly lost my appetite. Tbis image did more, bowever, than tell the story of our military shame. It bas also forced many of us ta ask ourselves whethier this kind of image 'needs' front-page Jennifer Henderson, Sarah Higgins, Will Lofgren, Katie ONeill, Leanne Topper, Becky Delorme, Josb Westerink, Laura Greer, Vijay, Ladd, Curtis Robinson, Matt Barnes, Russell Hawley, and Lisa Lunn. coverage, if any, in a Canadian newspapecr. During the day, the image baunted me. t is necessary, I began ta rationalize, that we know what aur'peacekeepers' do for 'sport. Clearly, some changes need ta take place. But, I couldn't escape the question of the placement of the photo on the front page . .. in my face, so to speak. Wouldn't the language of the horrar suffice? As the image continued ta haunt me, I began i wonder who the victim was. He was someone's çhild, si,-ïnone's brother, someon's friend. Then, with singular clarity it struck me what Kendal Hall News On Tbursday, November lOth the Ladies of Kendal Hilîs LOBA 1420 met and held their annual Election and Installation of Officers. Sis. Anne Jackson is the- new Wortby Mistress and Sis. is REALLY wrong with the Toronto Stars decision. It sets a precedent with wbich 1 arn most uncomfortable. Are we now to expect images of the battered women and cbildren of aur communities confronting us on a daily basis on the front pages of our newspapers? Wait a minute ... wbat a good idea!!! Wby not really 'go to town' and give us ail the gorie images of mutilated bodies wasbed up from lakes and rivers, dropped in dumpsters, or left lying bruised and broken in remote wooded areas or in hospitals? Perhaps, then, by forcing us to confront these images with our toast and coffee each morning, there will emerge public outcry about the unspoken violence wbicb is raging in aur communities. As we have seen the debate erupt over the Star's inducement into making us take a good, bard, long look at aur military shame, so, toa, should we confront aur domestic' shame. We alsa need ta ask ourselves: "Why is it 'okay' ta splash the harror experienced by an ananymous child in a distant country across the front page of aur newspapers?" As nated above, we don't do this with aur neighbours or their children when they suffer from acts of violence. Wbat is the difference? I arn not c omfortable witb this question, either. Diane Polley moved up ta Deputy Mistress. Sis. Terri Griffin was presented ber Past Mistress Pin by her mother Sis. Pat Grriffin of Tyrone Lodge. We -were ýpleased ta have members fromi Highland Star LOBA of Toronto conduet tbe Election and Installation. On Sunday the Mens Lodge, Kendal LOL 405 held their annual Turkey Supper, in the Kendal United Cburch. This was very well attended, with well over 100 meals served. The food was excellent and the pies, delicious. Once again two large boxes were filicU with non-perishable foods and one hundred dollars will be donated towards helping a needy family have a better Christmas. The Lodges may flot have the number of members that they once had but the work they do and the charities they support are growing.
