Cover Stoîy: As we draw nearer to December, the month for Clarke's annual talent assembly - this question is asked by students and staff. The question was even asked at last week's student coundil meeting. The problemas that Clarke is faced with is the two teachers who run the assembly are- no longer with the school and Clarke's new music teacher is stil l trying to get things together. in other words, his time is totally consumed with the music departmenL. Members of student council have suggested that maybe they should help run the assembly. 'Me idea is a good one. By the looks' of it, student counicil will probably bc helping to'run the assembly this year. I hope that everythingworks out because the talent assembly is a tradition that shouldn't be broken. This change is necessary because North America is running out of area codes that telephone numbers can be assigned to. With the increased use of telecom- munications equipment such as faxes, cellular phones and modems, more than 13,500 new numbers are required every day throughout North America. Zebra mussels in Rice Lake Zebra Mussels were discov- ered in Rice Lake earlier this fal as part of a monitoring program. The musseis were found at sampling sites near the c ommunity of Gores Landing and at the mouth of the Otonabee River. According to the numbers found this fall it is expected that high numbers of mus sels will appear in Rice Lake over the next few years., Large numbers of juvenile mussels were found attached to the bard surface of settling pipe samplers and aswell residents of the area were reporting juvenile zebra mussels attached to docks and boats. Zebra mussels were first discovered in the Kawartha Lakes in 1991 at sainple sites inBalsam, Rice and Big Bald Lakes. t is expected that the mussels will infest other lakes in the Kawarthas as they are transported from Rice Lake through the Trent system. The Ministry of Natural Resources said they need the help of boaters and ail water-users to help slow the spread of zebra mussels through the Kawarthas. Boaters should dlean their boats priorto moving from lake to lake.
