July 1988 1Some sixty residents of the Newtonville area attendcd a Comnittee of Clarke Constituents meeting held in the Newtonville United Church on Thursday of last wcck On Saturday of last week the Clarke Museum and Archives unveilcd a mil stone at die Kirby School House Museum which had operatcd at a mill in Orono along the Orono Creek for a period from 1837 to 1845. The unveiing of the stone was undertaken by Sam Cureatz, MPP Durham East with assistance from Mark Jackman, Hal McKnight, Frank Stapleton, Derek Burnett and Sam's son Colin. Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowden arrived in Bowmanvillc Tuesday afternoon to officially open the new administrative building. The Princess was greeted by Mayor Winters and acting Mayor Ann Cowman. Construction bas startcd at thc Armstrong IGA Plaza in Orono to house Uic LCBO store which will move from Uic downtown area to the plaza upon compîction of construction. New windows are now bcing installcd in the former Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce building at thc corner of Main and Parks Streets. The building is owned by Kay Lycctt who intends to move bis law office to this location sometime.at Uic end of October. Mrs. Lloyd Lowery brougbt a bailoon with an attacbment to it into the office two weeks ago wbicb had been found by Murray Greenwood wbiie baiing hay on Uic Lowery farrn. The balloon had travelied ail the way from Ypsilanti, Michigan and had been .-lcased by student Quinton ý1_Mrcer from the Lincoln Later Elcmentary School in Ypsilanti. July 1978 It was -cake for everyone last wcek at Uic Orono Public Schooi when Uic students paid tribute to Mrs. Mary Bunting who retires ftom Uic staff at Uic school and the teaching profession. Mrs. Roberta Nesbitt baked cakes, students prescntcd ber witb a silver tray, Uic Home and School Association presented ber with a chaise lounge and the staff honoured Mrs. Bunting at a dinner party at the Coach and Four Restaurant and presented ber with a crystal dinner bell. Work lias been progressing at the Durham County Senior Citizens Lodge in Orono over Uic past few months but now will bc affected by the carpenters strike. There is littie doubt this strike wil affect the completion date of the project Also, work is almost at a standstill at the Orono arena due to the carpenters strike. At a recent meeting of counicil it was noted that both Orono and Newcastle Arenas had scheduled official openings for the evening of August 19th. It was feit at the meeting that one of the nights would have to bc changed. Miss Lynn Lowery, daugliter of Mr-. and Mirs. Gordon Lowery, Orono has succeeded ini passing the Royal College of Dental Surgeons examinations and is now a qualified Dental Hygienist. A dune buggy ran amuk last Thursday at noon on Mil Street in Orono and camne to rest against a verandah pusbing out a post and doing some $500.00 damage to the verandah. The dune buggy was being towed at the time of Uic accident and with the towbar brake chain snapping the buggy ran into the verandali of Uic bouse owned by Mr. and Mrs. Arche Lunn of Mil Street.
