VF à.. The introduction of the first stage of the Ganaraska River Watcrsbed Plan was presented to the putblic'on December 7th at both an afternoon and evening session. The plan ran into more opposition than possibly was expected and a further meeting bas been set for January when a more defined explanation is to bc presented by tic Authority and their consultants, Gartner Lee Limited. The meeting is to be held iCanton. Mrs. Gayle Wood, Chief Administrative Officer for the Authority gave a bief overview of Uic past fifty years as far as Uic Ganaraska is concemned. She also spoke of thc benefits of watershed planning which is being undertaken across the province and as welI in the Ganaraska Watershed area. She pointed out that 7000 flyers had been distributed. There was a good turnout for both the afternoon and 'the evening meeting. The firm of Gartner and Lee have been hîred at a cost of $40,000 to undertake Phase One, of the study for which a back- ground report was said would bc ready in February. Mrs. Wood stated that monies i nfýe First Phase, $40,000 was bein g shared by Uic Authority and, the Province. Shec further stated that the province hias agreed to $70,0M of the Second Phase cost of $ 140,000. Sbc said that the Authority dïd flot have a matching amount and that involvcd municipalities would have to assist. The Third and Final Phase is estimated to cost Mr. Rick H-ubbard or Gartner Lee told bis audience that there was flot many good examples of Watershed Planning. He did say, however, that the Ganaraska Forest was. one of the best examples Uiat started fifty years ago in establisbing Uic forest in the beadwater areas of the Ganaraska River. He also said the study would show bow a watersbed system and eco-system works and that there was a call for people to be involved. He said it was also important to know what is happening beneath Uic ground. Tom Salter, a representative witb Gartner Lee, then sought iniput for tbe plan from those autending Uic meeting. Although a majority of those in attendance supported the dcvelopment of the Watershed Plan there was a number opposing, mainly from thc Hope Township area. Mr. Salter stated that a number at the afternoon meeting had also opposed the plan stating that it wasn't necessary and would adversel y affect those owning property.
