QP~W ~'~y TJtm, Wdnn~ay, Dcn~ber 21~ 1994 9 Kendal Column by Phyllis Lowery Due te the weatber I didn'î attend Churcli last Sunday, just baven't the energy te gel out and clear the driveway that eariy in the morning, guess my age is lelling on me, so that is wby no, coiumn last week. We have been very formuate so far tbis year, not too mucb snow as yeî. The Ski Hill bas been busy making snow and i ooked pretty good and tben tbis mild speil came, for the skiers sake, hope it didn't cause too mucb loss of snow. Saw a few cars there tbis momning. Witb the moist air and the cooler temp at niglit watch out for black ice, wbat looks like just a wet road couid quite possibly be ice. The 6th line and the ski bill are bad for tbis. Try to get out and take a drive Ibrougli Kendal and the surrounding area, the liglits are so preîty, eacb year tbey seem brigliter. Tbe sympathy of the community goes out te the Wood family in the recent deatb of a fatber and busband, Wesley, Wood of Orono. Sorry to bear that Laverne (Burns) Hoy is in hospital, we wisbh m a speedy recovery. Sunday church service was well aended, Ibis was the last Sunday of Advent. The service opened with "It Came Upon The Midnigbt ClSer. Rev. Black gave the Cali to Worsbip and led in the Prayer of Approach. The Christmas carol "0 Come Ail Ye Faitbfui" was sung foliowed by the Prayer of The Psaimist and the Words of Assurance. Keitb and Helen Wood lit the last candie and gave the readings. The children came forward and sang, "The Best Gift" and "A Tiny Litle Baby".* David said to them tbat last week tbey bad learned about some of tbe, decorations that were on the tree, and that this week tbey wililearn about some of the others. The star, this led the shepherds to the baby Jesus, at nigN~ we can al look up and see the stars, the dove, this reminds us of peace and how it brouglit a message to Noah. The butterfiy, this is resurrection, completeiy different - yet the saine being. The cup, the Challice, reminds us of the Last Supper, Christ gave His life for us. The angei, the messenger wbo carried God's word; the crook, shepherds use this to protect their animais, to- save tbem. Ail these symbois remind us of God's love, everyday we can see reminders of His love, the trees, the stars, doves, butterfiies. So many different tbings can remind us. The cbiidren's hymn was "Infant Hoiy".I The Scripture was from John Rev. Black told us that he bad been to a food bank to speak to the director, a young woman probably in ber late teens was there, she was pregnant and bad another small child with ber. She appeared very embarrassed, ber man was out of work and tbey needed heip. This was new to ber, ber man bad always worked and provided for them, but he bad lost hls job. île young woman looked at Rev. Black and pointed to ber obvious state and said, this was probably flot a good lime to be having a baby, but then she s miled and said, but we wiil make it, Mary and Joseph didn't have much but they made it. Wben Jesus vias born, it was a time of turmoil, Judea- was in a state of coliapse, the economy was bad, taxes were bigli, the Roman army was occupying Jerusalem. Many people had given up hope and believed that tbey were destined to be beaten,' bopeless. and down trodden people. There were others, there were those wbo bad faitb, tbey continued to meite the old stories of deliverance, of God's promise to Abraham of a land, bow God had promised Moses that lie would lead tbem out of slavery and of God's promise to send them a Saviour. It was flot a good tâme to have a baby, but Mary's hope was grounded in ber faith in God our hope is God's faith in us. God bas failli in people, God made man for ffellowsbip but, somewhere sin entered and interrupted this feilowsbip, but, God neyer lost falîli in mankind. The time is neyer right. Yesterday is c.ead and gone, tomorrow is tbe uncertain future. Today i7, the present God asks of us the same as He ie ked of Mary, have faith in hlm, bave hope. Hope, is the presence of God. Hope, is God reaching out to us in the middle of confusion, despair and anxiety. Hope, is the candie shining through the darkness beckoning us. The birtb of Jesus in a lowly stable in Bethlehem 2000 years ago gave each one of us new hope, because hope, is opportunity. Opportunity means fresh vision and courage to face and cope with whatever life confronts us. Hope is God's love reaching out to us. Tbrougb the chaos of our worid and the confusion of our mind, the very being of God reacbin g out until the word of the fatber became Mary's littie son.
