10- Omno Weekly Tlmes1 Wednesday1 D.c.mbsr ~ 1~O4 ) Seniors entertained at Orono Drilling into rock undertaken A drilling operation has been undertaken at the lakefront in Port Hope for the purpose of determining if an underground cavern could be safely located in the area. The drilling is to go down 200 metres to allow a determination of the rock formation. An underground cavern in Port Hope for Iow level nuclear waste bas been estimated at a cost of $150 milion. Above gmound storage could also be a consideration. The annual Christmnas dinner and party was beld in the Recreation complex at the Orono Senior Citizens Lodge hast Tbursday evening. Thbere were 48 seniors in attendance for tbe turkey dinner served by the Orono Arena Fund Raising Committee. Back in the News Again Wbat a deligbt it was tbis week to open an issue of the Port Hope Guide to view a drypoint drawing of Bernie Martin aiong with bis accordion as companion in the picture. It was Bernie of the Great Parmni production this past summer at tbe 4tb Line Theatre just outside Millbrook. In our view the wbole show was a knockout but for us Bernie Martin of Kendai was special as the perverbial clown and ever present tbrougbout most of tbe play. He was one of those characters you just bad to love and feast your eyes upon. 1 need say no more about Bemnie especially for the many from this area that did see the production of tbe Great Farnm. The question migbt come up - "bow come tbe drypoint drawing of this clown char- actor?". Scuiptor Ron Baird of Stouffville, Ontario bas created a number of iimited edition prints of members of the cast of the Great Farini wbicb include the bigb wire walker Nicky Dewburst, clownBernie Martin and some circus-type friends wbo did not appear in tbe play. Mr. Baird's wife, artist Lynda Baird,' is distantly related to William Leonard Hunt (Tbe Great Parini). According to the Port Hope Guide M r. Baird uses a drypioint metbod of scratching lines into a copper or zinc surface with a sharp needie to produce a drawing. The ridge of metal thrown up MW I Mrs. Lois McLeod accompanied the Orono Girl Guide groups in Cbristmas sining and also leading tbose present in tbe popular Christmas songs. Mrs. Allana Cole of Bowmanviiie tbrilled the crowd with ber singing wbich bas always been a treat. on eacb side of the cut, calied the burr, catches and botds ink wben the plate is wiped for printing, producing soft uines. Only ten prints of each drawing bave been made in tbe senies. The drawings are on display at the Linton Shaw Gallery in Port Hope at 95 Walton Street in Port Hope. They wiil be there until January lst. There bas been a number of events of late that have added to the joys of life and wben that bappens there is a lift to everytbing you undertake. 1 would bave to go back to the Stonebouse Tour of a week ago last Saturday. Surely everyone appeared to bc baving agreat time and witb a spirited sense of comradesbip. t was evident that a lot of tbought and time went into the whole affair and especially for those that so generousiy volunteered tbeir homes for the occasion. t was back to work on Monday and tbe occasion arose to make a phone cati to the Durbam Region Healtb Depart- ment. This could be cause for a run-arouind as I wasnt just sure who I wanted to talk to but 1 did know the reason. On top of that it couid bave been voice mail and baving a toucb-tone phone 1 coutd be pusbing 1 for some reason, 2 for another or wait for a number of alternatives that 1 was not in the least interested in and tben finatiy reacbing an operator that could weil be doing the book keeping as well. 1 wasnt disappointed wben* it was a real operator answering the phone and witb only two referrais 1 was looked after and most pleasantly too. You can say this is true of most catis and you would be right especially if you speak to a real operator. Voice mail is too mechanical. The last joy for the week came through a report in the Toronto Star. Prom the news that we do read and especially that we view over television it would seem that it would be impossible that the pligbt of children througbout the world could be improving. But the case bas been reported that indeed the lot of children in most countries is improving and is expected to keep improving. 1There is some good news out three and wîth good news there is aiways hope. May the spirit of Christmas keep you warm alIseason long...-and the happy glow of holiday joy stay with you thrcughout the year. Your business ... and friendship .. . mean the world to us. Thanks.
