8- ron Weklyflms~ ednsda ......r..1..1994 No doubt it's ail about music Mr. Barry Hodgins, director of music for the Clarington Concert Band, chats with Clarence Burgess, a noted composer and arranger of music over the years. Mr. Burgess, a resident of Strathaven is celebrating his 91st 1The other day 1 heard a carol on the radio. I was surprised to hear it sung in English. I knew t only in Polish. Suddenly, I was reminded of the collection of cultural memories I have of my childhood. Memories which began as traditionals on the other ide of the Atlantic, and which crossed the borders of many nations, even a few continents. These are the memnories wlich were handed down to my parents, and which I now hand down to my children. We even create a few of our own traditions which wil bc passed down as memory fromn my children, to any they might have. Music was a huge part of our lives when I was growing up. We sang at home, in the car, in the school choir, the church choir ... we sang with brownies/cubs and each Christmas we sang carols on the doorsteps of our neighbours. 1. learned songs in Polish,, German, French and English. Some came directly from the popular music- of North America, some were melodies from 'thxe old country'. others were 'borrowed' fromn other cultures. It didn't matter whieh language I sang in, I was happ y just to sing! So, i t comes to be, that the. tradition of decorating thc Christmas tree in our home in Hooterville-includes singng .. joyful singing. The kind that malces your heart melt and your mnd, replay images of home, community, family, sharing, giving and love. And out comes the album. Thei one that says: "St. Hedwigs School Gece Club and Choir Christmas, 1970". '"Theres mommy. She must ho singing the loudest. Look how wide her mouth is!", Garrett ainounces. The album bridges my memories of family and Christmnas and culture with those being shaped, i the minds of my sons. We handle it deficately. "Weren't th=r any CD players way back then?", ho asks. Way back in the days of the dinosaur and the veg-o-mnaic and big gas guzzling automobiles, I sang in the choir which produxced dhuce big vinyl records, and which sang ail over the countryside. We sang at retirement homes and at schools and churches. We sang at <what was then) the Boys Training School in Bowmanviile. Mrs. Woods, with hands gnarled with arthritis dancing on the ivories, and tiny feet bulging with bunions bouncing on the pedals, accompanied our angeic child voices. The long arm swecping from the black habit of Sister Regina Marie drew music from our voices like a magician who magically pulls white rabbits from his hat And, on cold winter nights, we would sing carols in the mother u.ngue of famiies fromn the Polish comnmunity in Oshawa, gladly accepting as payment, chocolates and chrusty (not pronounced crustee, but 'h'rusty), and the tearful siles of thxe grandparents of my childhood friends. Now, my children's voices harmonize with the voice of the clild that their mother--recorded, in sterco, on vinyl almost 25 years ago. We are a polyphonic chorus of voices crossing borders, oceans, cultures and generations. Happy Holidays to ail of you. To my family, Wesolych Swiat!
