Discussion Groups offered at Family Resource Centre Parenting Young Children This discussion group for parents with children under 6 years is designed to help parents understand their young children and gain skills for effective parenting. In the program, parents will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of developmental sequence, become aware of children's relief systems, understand misbehaviour and its purpose, learn ways to encourage children so that they develop positive self esteem, develop skills for effectively communicating with their children and fostering cooperation, become aware of how to prevent discipline problems how to deal with feelings, fears, tantrums, and develop positive social skills. The Family, Education Resource Centre of Durham House is offering an eight session discussion group on Wednesday, January 25, from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. The group will meet at Michael Starr Building, 333 King Street East, Oshawa. The fée is $48.00 per person plus a book fee of $18.50 and pre-registration is required. Winter Programming at the Visual Arts Centre, Once again the Visual Arts Contre is offering a comprehensive range of arts programming to help us all get through these short days and long winter evenings. For kids, there are classes and workshops for every interest and schedule. These are: Cartooning - Tuesday; Drawing for ten and up - Wednesday; Preschool Art and Potter for Kids - Thursdays; Junior and Senior Arts Medley - Saturdays; and Crafts with Judith Kendrick on Sundays. For adults: Mondays - Basic Art with Maralynn Cherry; Tuesdays - Life Drawing with James Paget, Camnera Skills with Paul Bennett, Watercolour painting with Theresia Barclay; Wednesdays - Darkroom skills with Don Piper, Qil or acrylic painting with Tony Cooper; Thursdays - Pottery with Barb Kimbaîl and Watercolour-based painting with maralynn Cherry. The centre will also be holding workshops in Weaving, Casein Tempera Painting, Papermaking, Woodcarving with power tools, Cooper Enamelling, and FloweM in Watercolour. The Visual Arts Centre is open year-round, offering a wide variety of art-related activities including exhibitions, workshops, courses, and special events. Hours are Tuesday - Saturday 12 - 4 p.m., Thursdays 12 - 8 p.m. and Sundays 1 - 3 p.m. during exhibitions. The next show, Industrial Paintings by Paul Kovananen, opens January 22.
