r. 2 OonaWeki Tine, ednsdy~ Ferury22, 1995j Incineration has its Pros and Cons Inc ineration of garbage is a topic which continues te be debated in Hope Township. 'Me proponents of incineration, propose that the mothballed Wesleyville Generat-ing Station could be a site for such an undertaking . At the present time Hope Township is encouraging a discussion on the issue but neither side have as yet to convince the other of the benefits or damage such a system would be. The Coalition for Integrated Waste Management, which supports incineration, recently held an information session on dioxin which by many is considered the main objection te incineratien. It was pointed out at the meeting that there are 75 known kinds of dioxins whichare a by- product of burning chienine compounds. Scientists continue te argue just how dangerous the dioxins are te human beings. It was pointed eut that dioxins are produced naturally through fires and volcanees and they have been in existence forever. It was stated that incineration can trap 99.8 percent of dioxins. In the U.S. about 15 percent of ail municipal waste is incinerated and the use of, incineration is greater in such countries as Switzerland and the Netherlands. The Hope group was told that it was impossible te rotally eliminate ail dioxin but that the level emitted from smokestacks are far below the levels considered harraful for humans. It was said they were less harmful than the large amounts of gas and leachate produced in landfill operations. Most modern high-heat incinerators blow waste gases into acid scrubbers and through either electrostatic precipitators or fabric filters in a "bag-house". It was admitted that small amounts of some 25 metals and acid gases along with dioxin are admitted from incineration. It was said that incineration dees bother people and that it is a somewhat of an emotional issue. The anti-incineration group present at the meeting said their questions were net really answered and that in one instance the pro-group were unaware of some of the recent studies and their otitcome. Before any real action could, be undertaken in incineration the province would first have te rescind their opposition te incineration for garbage disposai. If incineration-was te take place in Hope Township the. issue would first have te go te a vote of the citizens in the rnunicipality. It was said by one of the anti- incineration group that they were net saying that landfill was a wonderful thing for there are some horror stories. But a suggested state-of-the- art incineration plant could only be'compared with a sinilar state- of-the-art landfill site.
