Oron Weedy hnesWedndayMatch 1il99louel Donut Gallery Atoms give- great, performance The Orono Donut Gallery Atom Leafs started a very busy schedule on Tuesday night in Orono as they hosted the Little NHL Black Hawks. The two' teams traded goals twice in the first period as the Leafs' Jeff Thompson scored on a deflection of a clearing pass assisted by Kyle Moore followed by a nice tbree way passing play as Jamie Rowe scored assisted by Matt Reid and Justin Standeven. This completed the Orono scoring with the Black Hawks notching one late in the second and an empty net goal late in the third to go home with a 4 te 2 win in a close well played gaine. Friday evening the Oshawa Bruins were the visitors in the first encounter between these teams of the season. The Leafs were forced to go with only one of tbeir regular defensemen for this gamne and bolstered their lineup witb Matt Caruana, a last minute call-up froas the Novice Leafs, wbo played a fmne gaine for Orono. The Leafs came ot of the first period tied at two on the strengtb of an unassisted goal by Jeff Thompson, and a marker by Jamie Rowe assisted by Matt Reid. Orono took control of the gaine i the second period as Jef Tbompson scored his second goal of the gaine on a fine rush set up by Dan Tresise and Jamie Rowe notched his second, assisted once again by Matt Reid. The scoring continued in the third with defenseman Lee Allun scoring twice with two bard shots te the top corner of the net from bis blue line position witb botb of these goals set up by passes back te the point by the always bard working Matt Reid. A late goal by Oshawa ended the gaine witb the score Leafs 6, Bruins 3. Saturday it was off to Marmora for the Leafs to compete, in their annual tournament. Orono came out flying in their first encouniter against Peterborough St. Aiphonsus and romped te a well deserved 7 to 1 victory. Scoring for the Leafs were Dan Tresise with one and Mark Brennan, Matt Reid and Jarnie Rowe each with two. Assists went te Scott Webb with three and Jeff Thompson, MatU Reid, Mark McAlister, Chris Kirkbride, Justin Standeven and Lee Allin each with one. Mark Brennan. was awarded the game MVP for the Leafs. At mid-day tbe Marmora Old Boys sponsored a shoot out competition with each team selecting one shooter and one goaltender to compete in a penalty shot situation. MaUt Reid placed well up in the sbooting category but the bighligbt came wben Orono's Josh Brandt came tbrougb to win the top goalie award allowing only tbree goals in nine shots from the best shooters in' the tourney. Congratulations Josh. The Leafs second game was played against Port Hope to determine wbo would advance te the "A" Championship. Orono played strong game but unfortunately this was one of those games where the bounces went the other way as the Leafs missed on two breakaways and tbe Port Hope goal posts came up big as tbe Leafs fell to a 3 to 0 loss. Matt Reid was awarded a well deserved gaine MVP for is bard work and aggressive play. The boys can be proud of their performance as they neyer gave up in wbat the referce callcd tbe "best game of the tournament". Wcll donc Leafs. .News from Ott'awa wlth Alex Shepharcl MP Durham, Last week the govcrnmcnt announccd changes to MPs pensions. The age eligîbility is now 55, the practice of double- dipping is stopped. The governmcnt could bave gone even further. MPs clectcd in 1988, or carlier, are stili eligible to collect pensions in their forties. This rcally bolliers me., 1 lobbied to make age eligibility apply to aIl MPs regardless of whcn they wece clected. Many MPs were against making changes to their pensions. 'm saddencd govcrnment rcduced seniors' pensions by claw backs and by eliminating age exemptions. It scems MPs can implement retroactive measures with others' inc(>In but not their own. Thesc MPs should wakc Up. 1 apo)logize to our seniors Uîat 1 and s<)me other MPs were not ale to win Ulic day on this po)int. Turning to the budget, you know by rkow there wilI be reductions ini the numbcr of civil servants hanging around offices a taxl)aycrs expenise. Reductions are one thîng, but the question remains as to bow we get effic iency out of the civil servants remaining. STestimony given by the Department of National Defence (DND> to my Public Aceounts Committee hit the efficiency question straight on tbe head. 1DN D have been administering over 3,000 resîdences on military bases across Canada. Over the years it has been casier for the rilitary to get money to, build new buildings than to get money t() improve buildings already existing. The result bas been these 3,(WX buildings under DND rules is a rcmarkablc nine years. Compare that Io thc private sector which gets the job donc in two years. Each militai-y base stocks its own invefltory for maintenance. Andi as we ail know, the worst thiing to do is run out of iiiventtory. But the military is stocking cery conceivable item you can think of most of which will neyer bc used. unitd Sniors plan event for Orono seniors The United Senior Citizens of Ontario Inc. Zone 42 has planned an event to be held at the Orono Seniors Centre on Monday, March 27th from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. The program being offered bas said te bc a real treat as well as an educational prograru. Sergeant AI Perry, Traffic Sergeant of the Kawartha Ontario Provincial Police will present "Seniors Living Life to the Fullest" in conjunction with a video on "Continuing to Drive"; "Rules of the Road and Physical Changes associated with aging that might affect your driving". It is a must to see and hear especially those seniors that still drive. Ail are invited to attend and bring a friend. Refresbments te be served. March 1984 The Sexiest men in the Town of Newcastle will be identified this week. Friday, March 9 is Election Day. Polîs will be open from noon until 5 p.m. Sexy men contest polling station in Orono is at Hamîltons Insurance, Main Street. Overal winner of Newcastle Sexy Men contest was Carson Elliott, Bowmanville. Other winners were Harold Ransberry, Orono, Sexiest Farmer; John Slater, Orono, Sexiest Salesman; Lloyd Ransberry, Orono, Sexiest This is remarkable at a time when modern manufacturing operations are switcbing te "just- in-tirne" inventory practices which reduces stock and costs. Since being elected I've written a number of columns pointing out what 1 see as some of the short-falls of our buge civil service. But I think I've been misunderstood. 1 have notbing but praise for civil servants who are front-line employces serving the public, providing direction and guiding taxpayers through the maze of govemnment red tape. To me it isn't rigbt these men and women will bave their jobs considered expendable by middle and upper management. It is the middle and upper management that bas to be trimmed - not front-line workers. There are too many managers unable to justify wby they are even ncedcd. And as the Prime Minster said why should taxpayers be footing the bill for civil servants doing notbing for me or for you. Clcarly we. need a total restructuring of bureaueracy whieh this budget now provides opportunities for. Creating a ncw rcvitalized civil sei-vice is in keeping with a nlew revitalized Canadian economy. A similar meeting is being held in Peterborough on March 20tb from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 in the meeting room of the Cephas Christian Reformed Church at 220 Goodfellow Road, Peterborough. The land next to Clarke High School is owned by the District Board of- Education. Steve West a native of Orono is making bis mark this year in the American Hockey League. He is nearing the 100 point mark for the season in goals and assists havmng at this time a total of 97. He would be the 23rd player in the league since its inception to reach 100 points and1 if -he makes the 50 goal mark will be the Ilth player to reacb the magical number. Steve plays for the New Haven team. Good news for people of Orono and Clarke -- if tax information can be described as good news.
