Orono Weekly Timon, Wednesday~ March 15 1995 - Il ' Thoughts From The Top: How are people to go about prcparing for tbc student council elections? Cuver Story: After Marcb Break, student council -will bc holding an assembly which wiil stant up the annual Student Council Elections. This is thc lime of year wbere students try and be like the politicians. For the students wbo will attempt to run, bhey will be given a booklct where bbey must find atIclast îbree studenîs to nominate them. As soon as that's donc Ibey go tb thc nexb step. Prepare a campaign manager and a team b bhelp arange posters, ads and announcemenîs. The, object of thicelection is flot to see who is goimg to win, but is to try to find the best able student to bandie thc position that thcy are running for and bave fun doing it. The next step is campaigning, wbich lasts for about a couple of weeks. Signs are postcd around 'thc school wilh Uic message to vote. A very convincing speech must also be prepared by the candidate obcb read in front of thc school. This happons aI the second assembly wbich the students and their respective teams engage i their campaigns. The las t stcp is up b bbce students. A sheet of paper is handlcd to ail of thc homerooms with thc lisî of candidates. A day or so later, they find out if they have been excepteci into student council. Last years election was neyer tbat successful because of the lack of candidates. Actually the positions were given to the studenîs last year. The only position debated was the one' for prime minister. Both ran a dlean and clear cul campaign. The success of the winner depended on the student witb the best reputalion and tbe greatest campaign. This year members of the studenî council are encouraging the student body to corne out and run in tbc election because the more involvement tbere is the better the activities the school bas. The clection begins aI the end of the montb. In future columns, 1 will be going in bo detail on who's running for the council. Critic's Corner: Last year there wcren'I Ibat many candidates in the election, lcî's hope Ihere is more this year. - John Kwaschcn, Intuitive Critic. Three-Sided Sories: My advice bo students is to go ahead and run for it because tbey dont really bave anytbing to lose - Lee Cranton, Sensible Critic. Lotsa Complaints: People shouldn't vote because of popularity, friendship or just to be funn y. The elections should bc "lt Feels a Lot Like Suînmer" If tberc isn't a song entitled "It F cecs a Lot Lille Summer" then tbere should be as we walk outside these îast bwo to tbree days. Not only dlocs iî feel like summer but it Îwok lice summer and there afre many other happenings that bring te mind laIe spring and sumiller. Listen 10 the birds , Uic Gold Finch and Houée Fincb continue witb a course of chitter and taken seriously because the rigbî person could mie a différence at our scbool. - Derek Barbon, One Sided Critic. Wiseman's Advife: "I aîîcmpted tb run for Communications Officer last year, and becàuse of uncertain circumstances, 1 couldn't mun for one of the six positions. ]But the good news is if you can't participabe in 'the elections, you can still be part of council, no questions asked," - Pbill Felbham. Famous Last Words: To get wheifd youre going, it doesn't burt 10 remember wbere you bave been .. bottom line. chatter . .. the Blue Jay secams out. . the Cardinal whips out bis wbistle from a distance . . . the kids bave corne out of the arena to play street bockey .. and seen in Orono a red Convertible witb the top down parked downtown and a young lad out cbipping away at a golf bail. It is ail in the atmosphere of summer. Possible the note should bc enjoy it while you can colder airs are on the way ... naturally. Possible il is flot wbat it looks like and tbat brings me 10 the greatesî Faux Pas Ive made tbis pasî winter. Often bave I questioned wbere the birds bad gone, flot jusî for a day but long periods of time. .The Black Qil Sunflowers seedsalways did tbe trick and tben wben we added a cylinder of Niger seed we thoughî we haci it made the latter being a big attraction for the Gold Fincb. But alas ail died off this past winîer and we did not have the opportunity to enjoy birds as in pasî winters. I was blaming it ail on the fact that the Niger Seed had turned a light brown and that it was due to possible sheiling of the busk. Just too lazy I suppose 10 really take a good look aI tbe problem until a couple of weeks ago wben 1 purchased anotber lot of Niger seed aI the Co-op. In fact 1 was hal blaming thev Co-op for the poor seci hy were .iandling. Bririging the latestijurchase home 1 snapped up the cyinder feeder and took it in the bouse to get rid of the ligbî brown seed in the garbage and to refi the feeder with the purchase of black Niger seed. On telling Donna of the problem with the seed she took a look at what I was pouring out.. . * that's grass seed!" Sure enough it was grass seed andit was no wonder that the birds had been turning away from the feeder. Just another Faux Pas but it is in training for others to foilow as they wilL.
