A littie Scottish music for this group hear about today is a raise in taxes and a cutting of services, while things like government pensions, which MPs and MPPs can collect after only 6 years of service , remain untouched. When will these people in authority realize that we pay their salary, that we vote them into power to look after our best interests, flot theirs. Maybe these things should be brought up at the board's budget meeting on Mônday, April 10. We live in a democracy that allows us to speak Our minds. Lets use that right and make sure we are heard. by Troy Young In the parade of counays at the skaters Andrea Mirsch and Melanie Orono Skating Carnival Saturday Allun. the above group depicted Scotland In the group (not in order) and are being assisted by Senior Heather Bangay, Hiliary Barnes, Troy....r.mb.i.g. Trustees at the Northu mberland- CIaring ton Board of Education recently released information regarding the state of their budget for this school year. In their press release they list five different proposed rates, from a 2.068 average increase to a 4.119 increase. They gave a list of things that would need to be eut from their budget plans, including fixing up some of our older more run down schools1 to eliminating new computers fromn our classrooms. It was even announced that to operate at the lowest rate of increase would necessitate the cutting of staff and programs. Now it is' reasonable to expect that increases must occur. And it is reasonable to accept a 4 per cent increase in Our taxes when it comes to ensuring that our youth receive the best education possible. What is unreasonable is the strong ami tactics the board is using to get it. To say that jobs will have to be cut if we do not support this increase is irresponsible. To threaten to cut funding for the repaîr and maintenance of our schools, many of which are in very rough shape is inexcusable. And to imply the reduction of funds for new computers for our students, as we stand here on the verge of an age where everything will be mun on computers is just plain wrong. Maybe the money should be eut from a large and unwieldy administration. It is possible that our board ig rmn so smoothly that their are no unnecessary jobs being filled. Maybe ahl of the workers are being overworked at the board offices. However, 1 am sure that money could be cut fromn thei operating budget instead of from our children. We pay our taxes so our children can receive a quality education, which includes1 safe learning environnients andthe exposure to technology, not so the administration running our school systemn can get bigger and bigger. You can also be sure that the $50,000 reduction, in staff benefits wil not be coming out of the pockets of the upper level administrators; new teachers and low level administration will most assuredly bear the brunt of that reduction. The provincial government has proposed a plan for implementing- a province wide education system, thus limiting -the power and size of local school boards. This plan is supposed to ensure that the money brought in for education is finding its way into the classroom where it belongs. t obviously cannot happen soon 1It's two down and two to go as Orono's Geraldi Financial Tykes win their second game in the round robin; claiming a'strong victory against Newcastle Photographic 11 -0. They are not the only board that is having these difficulties. In Peel, the school board recently voted to a 9% pay increase for its superintendents, bringing the lowest paid from $93,000 a year to the paltry sum of $ 101,000 a year. That's a lot of computers. What is really sickenîng about the Peel board is that th ey voted to make the increase retroactive to 1993; the superintendents stand to make an additional $ 16,000 for years already worked. What this is an attack on is the irresponsibility found on the higher levels, not just in the school boards, but in ail levels of govermment. It seems that ail we We finish the second with a nice goal by Rilcki Palmateer who was positioned right in front of Newcastle's net.
