Senior complex put on hold1 (Continued from page 1) purpose spaces. Future work ncedcd for the roof and a walkway-linking the building to Uic proposcd non-profit housing structure behind thc firehall arc not included in this cost. Don Welsh, co-chair of the Clar ington Older Adult Association rccommends the renovation of Uic firehaîl until a new building can bc erected. Councillor O'Toolc askcd Mr. Welsh if he felt this was a necessary undcrtaking. Mr. Welsh said yes, as the Lion's Centre was inadequate. A building in Uic downtown areais preferrcd as a replacement for Uic Lion's Centre. O'Toolc askcd if the renovations would be sufficient to accomodate the seniors. Mr. Welsh said no, more space would be nceded in the future. The renovated space would not be lefI only for seniors t10 use. The area could be used for a varicty Of grouPs, including youth groups. The renovations are necessary if anything is to be donc with the firehali. Due to its location and quality of ils construction, the building is worth saving. Councillor Scott asked about the roof of thc building. He was informied that Uhc roof did necd some niinor work ai thc present dîmc, but that it was watertight. Councillor Scott was worried that this might be a major cost in the future. Mr. Moran said the condition of thc roof was bcyond thc scope of their study, and did, not want to suggest how long thc roof would last. Councillor Scott wondered what Uic maintenance costs of Uic building would bc if it wcrc to remain empty. Mr. Moran cstimated the costs 10 be anywhere from $50,000-$100,000 a year. Council agrced that there is a definite need for a seniors' ccntre in the downtown location. However, it was worried about the outlay of moncy for what was seen as a 'quick fix'. Councillor O'Toolc was not convinced that Uie report was complue. Thcr is no indication how much it would cost to renovate Uic rest of thc structure in thc future. Due to Uic proposcd seniors' centre in the' non-profit housing plan, il was askcd i f thc transference of Uhc seniors' programs from Uic Lion's Ccntre could wait until the proposed building could be buiL. The report was referred back te Uic C.A.O. until Uic status of thc non-profit centre was flnalized., At the present lime th seniors meet cvcry, Tuesday ai Uic Lions Centre in Bowmanvillc. The renovations would give Uic seniors a centre of their own, a place wherc Uicy could schedule Uieir own programs without bcing constraincd by other groups. Its central location makes il an ideal location and Uic rcnovated centre could be used for other purposes if and when Uic seniors wcre to ever leave Uic firehail for another location.
