Village Card, Gîft and Photo grap hi c celebrate anniversary Orono Horticultural, Society show resuits By Lisa Nikifork 1Village Card and Gift Shoppe and Newcastle Photographic celebrated their first anniversary this past week. The three day celebration was topped off by an open house and a cake cutting ceremony on Saturday. Cake an d refreshments were available for by Harvey Thompson Some time has elapsed since the last information update but the process has continued and a number of things have happened. CLG Chair John Veldhuis retired from teaching and, because of hîs commitment to establish an agricultural college in Haiti, has recently retired as Chair of the CLG. 'We would like to wish John every success in his new endeavours and also recognize the long service and commitment that, for over 25 years, he has made to the dlean- up of the low-level radioactive waste stored at Port Granby. t is the wish of the members of the Clarington CLG that I assume the position of Chair and it will be an honour to serve both the Community Liaison Group and the community in this capacity. The Opting for Cooperation process established to find a volunteer host community was scheduled to end March 31, 1995. However, because of unfinished work at Deep River and' the eleventh hour decision by Port Hope Council to become a volunteer host community for the waste stored at both the Port Granby and Welcome Sites, as well as in their town, the mandate of the Siting, Task Force has been extended wo September 30, 1995. At Deep River the Siting Task Force (STF) and Atomic Energy Company Limited (AECL) are considering co-disposal in one site of the waste generateil at the Chalk River Laboratories as well as the wastes from Port Granby, Welcome and Port Hope Sites. At Port Hope consideration is being given to disposai of the wastes ini caverns in the limestone bedrock near the harbour close to the present Camneco facility. If this option is acceptable, to an alternative is for the Port Hope wastes only to be stored in an everyo ne to enjoy. The two businesses share the premises at 19 King St. East in Newcastle. Paul and Chris Bennett run the photo shop and Gary Johnson and Joan Kimbaîl manage the gift shop and Liz Walton is the decorator. They would like to thank the surrounding community above-ground mound at the current'Highland Drive site. (In this case, what wiIl be donc for the Port Granby and Welcome sites?) Referendums will be held in Deep River and in Port Hope in September 1995 to determine whether the residents will accept any of the proposais. The low-level radioactive waste at Port Granby & Welcome has been classified into three categories for the Deep River and Port Hope cavern options: Primary Waste, Clearly Contaminated Soul and Marginally Contaminated Soil. Neither Deep River nor Port Hope are prepare 'd totake the Marginally Contaminated soul, which presumably will be left for nature to cope with over a fairly long period of time. Another activity which is of major importance to Clarington is the study of potential transport routes for the waste once it has been excavated. The CLG would like to have your opinions and views on the above items. Our next meetings will be held in the Newtonville Community Hall on May 2 and June 6, 1995 at 7:30 p.m. You are cordiaily imvited tw attend. Clarington CLG members are ready to listen to your questions and concernis. For further information please phone 983-9555.
