In Newcastle, the Guides and Pathfinders combined to coilect the most garbage out of aIl groups participating. In Orono, the Cubs were the only group helping with the cdean-up, but they blitzed the downtown IGA stores in area hold Community Clean-Up events area collecting around 25 bags of trash. Commendations are in order for ail the groups that came out, Armnstrong's I.G.A. in Orono, and Newcastle I.G.A. for sponsoring the event. On Saturday, April 29, the I.G.a. in Newcastle held their annual Community Clean-Up. There were roughly 200 people who had arrived by 9:30 a.m. to help dlean-up the litter. There were members of the guiding movement, members of scouting moveme nt, a couple of residents from the Newcastle Health Care Centre accompanied by a staff member, representatives from both f the local schools, mnembers of the Optimist Club, and their families, and lots of Newcastle residents. Rudy Kraayvanger, one of the stores employees was put in charge. He welcomed everyone who had corne to help and then quickly assigned each group an area of the town that was to be cleaned. After everyone was handed a couple of empty garbage bags, courtesy of the I.G.A. they were off to their assigned areas. For the next two hours everyone was busy helping to beautify our town by picking up the litter. Around 11:30 a.m. everyone returned to the I.G.A. where they were rewarded for their efforts witli a drink and a hot dog or hot Italian sausage that members of the Optimist Club had cooked up on the bar-b-q, of which they were also selling at a low cost of $2.50 to the public with ahl proceeds being donated to the Newcastle Public School's Playground Equipment Fund. Ail the refreshments were donated by the I.G.A. The manager and ahl the employees of the Newcastle I.G.A. would lilce to take this time to say thank you to everyone who pitched in to help make our town a cleaner and safer place to live in and proud of. by Betty Formosa Bue Boux program reaiches ail rural areas in Durham Top Rae adviser runs The NDP are running a top Bob Rae adviser in Northumber- land County. Murray Weppler of R.R. 1 Gore's Landing bas been nominated to contest the riding for the NDP. He bas been involved in poliics for the past 30 years. Van dalize east Port Hope beach Vandals recently damaged a fence in the east beach in Port Hope dragging some of the posts to a bonfire on the beach. The cost of the daimage is estimated at $2,000. Province funding housing, 80 units The Housing Minister has approved a housing development of 80 units for Northumberland County. The housing will be developed by the Women in Crisis Co-operative Home Inc. Three-quarters of the housing wil be set aside for women and chîldren including referrals from the womner's shelter in Cobourg. Hope renaming roads progressing Hope township has over the past two years been involved in the naming oftheir roads and the numbering of properties. At a recent meeting councîl gave approval for namne changes for two roads whîle denying changing the name of two other roads. To purchase land for No. 2 East of Newtonville The Region of Durham seek a temporary easemnent of lands east of Newtonville in order to carry out work on Hlighway No. 2. The jurisdiction of Highway 2, is now with the Region of Durham for both maintenance and capital works. The- province provides some funding for both operation and capital works. Paul Quantrili looks to good year Paul Quantrill is looking to a good year with the Philidelphia Philies this season. He is off to a good start in relief pitching in- the young season. Region supports Bethesda House. The Region of Durham last week voted their support for the execution of an agreement to be undertaken with Bethesda House in Bowmanville. The funding wil provide residential and cnisis counselling services for up to fifteen victims of family violence retroactive to February 27, 1995. The Region who wîll enter into an agreement with the province will pay $34.50 per person with an annual ceiing of $188,890.00. The chairman and Regional Clerk have been authorized to sign the necessary documents. Households in the rural areas of the Region will now be able to receive curbside blue box collection service for the first time. The program gets underway in April 1995. Rural residents who receive municipal garbage collection in the Municipality of Scugog, Uxbridge and Clarington can now recycle up to 15% of their household waste. These area Municipalities will be delivering a new Blue Box and a Collection Schedule to ail residents who wil be involved in this new program. Only the following materials are to be mncluded in the blue box program: newspapers (bag or place loose in bottom of box); glass botules and jars (rinse, remove tops, place loose in box); plastic pop bottles (clear and green only, rinse, remove tops, place loose in box); metal beverage and food cans (rinse, place loose in box); corrugated cardboard (bundled, no bigger than the blue box); telephone books (place loose in box). To avoid contamination, only recycle the above listed materials. For further information, residents are encouraged to contact their local Municîpality.
