Clarke had a very impressive showing isaving the two top scores from the Kawartha Region. Acàdemic Decathlon is a varsity competition involving six tests in matisematics, fine arts, economics, social sciences, and science. Students also write an essay, are judged in interviews and speeches andi participate in a team competition in an event called thse Super Quiz. The theme for this year's- event was Biotechnology. Teams came from as far away as B.C. to participate and there were a total of thirteen teams at the event. Clarke garnereti eleven medals including two golti medals Mother's Day Poetry at St. Francis Miss Sandra Young, the grade four teacher along with her students, held a poetry reading for their Mother's on Friday, May 12, in the school's library in honour of Mother's Day. Each child read one poemn from the five selections that they hati composed and put in a book. After reading their spec ial poemn the children presenteti their mother's with a carnation. Refreshments were served shortly afterwards. What a wonderful way to say 1 LOVE YOU MQM! by Betty Formosa The art club tisat is iselti every Tuesday and Thursday at luncistime, for thse students is off to a great start but with over 90 students participating every week they are running out of supplies fast. They would appreciate any of tise following items: yarn, fabric, buttons, meat-trays, egg cartons, plastic sharnpoo bottles, used wrapping paper andi bows, bottle caps, twist ties, worn out towels, sheets and shower curtains, etc. Anytising you can think of they can use. Please drop your donation at the school's office anti they wiil make sure it is given to Mrs. Sigrid Mcdowell, who is in charge of the art club. Once again aduit art classes are being offered at thse scisool by Mrs. Sigrid McDowell. The cost is $2.00 each week. Ail class fees will lie donateti to thse scisool to purcisase supplies andi equipment for the junior andi senior art clubs. They were frosu a group of young people between the ages of 18 by Tricia Dubeau and i ree silver and two bronze by Aaron Staples. Shauna Ellis, Jason Twardowski, Jason Goral, andi Julie Harper all picked up individual bronze medallions as weff. This was a tremendous opportunity for students to challenge themselves in the deptis of study that was involved. Toastmasters Connie Nelson andi Irene Konzelmann were instrumental in preparing thse students for the speaking portions andi many staff at thse high school were a big help in giving of their expertise to get the students ready. Students are looking forward to tise competitio "n next year at Nanaimo, B.C. andi 25 who corne from ail across Canada'. They travel around giving up their time speaking in scisools trying to educate our young people in the practice of a lifestyle of chastity. This presentation has been very well received in other parts of Canada and is recommendeti by organizations such as tise Knigists of Columbus. Tisey are trying to provitie an alternative viewpoint for our students to the one tisat predominates the media and teenage culture today. The grade five teacher, Mrs. Pascoe, anti her students entertainedt ieir rnothers at the author's celebration andi Mother's Day Tea iselti on Thursday, May il. Each child read a selection from their own creations and then the children serveti the refreshments mucis to the delight of the mothers who were in attendance. Thse motisers of tise grade two stutients were inviteti to a Mother's Appreciation Tea on Friday, May 12. The ciildren sang songs, read some stories and did some line dancing. The mothers also got into the act witis thse dancing part of the celebration. A great urne was isat by one and all. St. Johns Ambulance will be presenting a First Aid Course to ail students from junior kintiergarten to grade eigist on Thursday andi Friday this week for the low cost of $2.00 per student. The programs will be atjusteti to the age levels of tise classes participating. Ail the children who were in attendance at the free movies that were shown in the Centennïial Room of the Newcastle Community Hall on Saturday, May 13, courtesy of the Newcastle Optimist Club, would like to say thank you for an afternoon of fun. They would also like to say thank you for al the refreshments that were supplied. They were delicious! Chiltiren of aill ages got into the swim of things on Saturday, May 13, at the free family swim, courtesy of the Newcastle Optimist Club, over at the Fitness Centre in Bowmanville (next to Bowmanville High School).
