Letter to the Editor Dear Mr. Youing, As the new owner and editer of the Orono Weekly Times I can understand your desire te get învolved in cemmunity issues. Hewever, from the twe current issues that I've been feiiowîng, 1 think you need te do more com- prehensive research before you write, se that you stop misrepre- senting the facts. This letter will refer te your most recent blunder, your "NOISE POLLUTION" editerial in last weeks paper. Why wouid you net have centacted someone from the North Claringten Ratepayers Association te hear both sides of the stery befere speuting off sup- posed facts? Since you failed te do se, perhaps 1 can clarify some things for yeu. 1Iknow at least tweof the six neighbeurs around Mosport are members of the North Claringten Rate Payers Association (NCRPA) . While the NCRPA did lobby the Town last week over noise, camp- ing and parking at Mesport, you faiied te mnform people about the entire issue. mhe noise pollution people are concerned about is that from the proposed Music Concerts that Mospert has scheduled for this summer and from the Saturday night races on the Ovai Track. The drone frem the Road Racing Track usuaily ends about 11:00 p.m. Last Saturday and Sunday mights the music was play- ing past 1:00 a.m. Most people go te bed after 11:00 p.m., net after 2:00 a.m. Aise, the constant drone of racing cars is net the same noise as rhythmicai bass and -drums. Mosport is estimating 50,000 peo- pie wili attend their large concerts scheduled for this summer. Last weekend was peanuts compared te the noise that can be expected from such a crowd! The Ovai 'rack was buiit in '9 1-'92 and bias net been operating fer 35 years. It is interesting that ne one can remember sceeng a Zoanmg application for public iniput befere the track was built. It is aise, interesting that Mosport is one of the few tracks left that continues te race "open header stock cars" even though at the Council meeting they said this was going te stop. For those net i the knew, these cars have ne exhaust system, no poilu- tien contrel, ne mufflers. Conclusions - they are extremneiy loud! With respect te camping, Mesport bas ne zoning that allows camping. Mosport is located on the Oak Ridges Moraine and you don't need a degree in environ- mental science te realize the adverse impact 50,000 peope wiil have on this purifying land ferm with respect te human waste, water consuimption, and centaminated mun-off. There are ne designated areas for parking. Even if 50,000 people car pool (and that's practical?!) there would be 12,500 cars. mhe concentrated parking of thousands of vehicles on the moraine will compact the soul and reduce it's ability te recharge the ground water source. Rain must be able te infil- trate the soil fer the recharge furic- tien-of the. moraine te work. celating ability will be threatened. Parking cars aise disturbs the thin layer of top soil overlaying the sand and gravel of the moraine, 'Mis, combined with compaction, will lead to severe water run-off and extremely detrimental erosion in a very short time. And fmnaily, while your article makes Mosport sound like such a model corporate citizen, consider that as of Feb. 2th, 1995, they had not paid their land tax for 3 years, that's $204,855.09! They need te employ a lot of local citizens to boost the local economny with that outstanding bill! mne Mosport issue needs te be addressed. Just because something bas been going on for 35 years dees net mean we have te continue to coddle it. To ensure thie safety of our forests and the continued func- tien of the moraine, Mosport should have te follow the same rules that everybedy else has te.
