The Trail, which stretches from Hamilton to Trenton, has 17 Iidiometres in Clarington. through is one of the most envi- ronmentally sensitive areas in southern Ontario, as weil as being die most heavily populated. Over 875,000 people live within three kilometres of the waterfront fromn Burlington Bay to the Trent River, 4.5 million live within a haif-hour drive, and 7.3 million within a two hour one. There have beecn human communities along the water's edge as long as the Lake Ontario waterfront has existed- some dating back at least 11,000 years when the glaciers first receded. Thus, the area is also one of rich heritage, with over 577 identified archaeo- logical sites, 540 designated bis- toric buildings, and hundreds of cultural heritage landscapes. The existence of the Trail helps to ensure that these areas, both of environmental and historical importance, rernain for everyone to' enjoy.
