Donald and Isabel Hamm of Orono marked a milestone in their lives this past Saturday. A celebration was held in honour of their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary at the Oddfellows Hall in Orono. Many well- wishers dropped by to congratulate the couple. Donald and Isabel met through her brother who played in a band with Donald. The band was the Jack Galloway Dance Band. Isabel's brother was a piano player and Donald played a variety of instruments, including the saxaphone and the clarinet. Donald is also one of the original members of the Orono band and has played in bands since he was twelve years old. Donald worked for the government for many years in road construction and bas been From The by Sandra Thornhill I remember when Jay McKee and my younger son Gordon hated being dragged from the warmth of their beds to attend an early morn- ing hockey practice at the (Kingston) Anherstview Arena. I remember Jay sitting half asleep on the couch while his mom or dad helped him don his hockey gear. Next to him on the couch often sat Gordon in a similar dream-like state and I was also coaxing a sleepy little boy into hockey equipment. It was before six a.m. and the boys were only seven years old, which meant there was little dedi- cation to the sport on either young- ster's part. Or so it appeared at the time! Jay McKee went on to play defense with the Sudbury Wolves. He was traded to the Niagara Falls Thunder in January '95. In his division Jay was awarded 'best body checker' in his division and is rated from 9th to 12th in the NHL draft. retired for several years now. Although he commented, "It takes more time to do nothing than it did to work." Isabel worked at a variety of jobs including managing the Dutch Oven Restaurant across from where they live on the 115 Highway. The Hamm's two children were there with their families for the event. Their son Douglas came all the way from B.C. to share his parents special day. Their daughter Marilyn came from Sault Ste. Marie. The Hamms also have six grandchildren. Marilyn bas four children and Douglas bas two. Donald and Isabel still live on the property which has been owned by his family for generations. Donald himself Heart Jay McKee is a seventeen year old defenseman with a bright future. That little boy with long legs I remember well. Today he is a towering 6' 2-1/2" and weighs approximately 190. He is a solid defenseman with a dream . . . a dream to play in the NHL. For the past few weeks Jay McKee bas beer busy meeting with management of various teams - Chicago Black Hawks, Washington Capitals, New Jersey Devils, Winnipeg Jets etc. This week he flies out west along with his girlfriend, mother, father and grandfather to attend the July 8 NHL draft. Why do some kids grow up and make it big in sports? Talent plays a major role. But personality is also important; com- mitment and dedication to their dream comes from within. Family can make or break a 'child with promising potential'. Encouragement, finantial support, sacrifice of time, understanding of your child's strengths as well as moved there in 1924 and was raised there. In regards to their party, Isabel commented that their friends were good help in organizing it. The room was decorated with bright yellow balloons and beautiful bouquets of yellow roses. Also on hand was a certificate signed by Bob Rae congratulating them on behalf of the Ontario Government. There were also many old pictures to be admired. One friend joked with the couple telling them they deserved a medal. The Hamm's anniversary was actually on Friday, June 30th but the celebration was held on Saturday to enable more people to come. A big congratulations goes out to Donald and Isabel on this special occasion. limitations, and a desire to help your son or daughter achieve dreams in life is extremely impor- tant. Knowing Jay McKee's mother and father as I do, I can vouch for the sacrifices made over the years and the encouragement heaped on their son to give him the confidence to strive for dreams. Cathy and Gord McKee are wonderful, loving parents who are very proud of how hard their son has worked over the years. When the McKee family fly out for the NHL draft this week I will be rooting for Jay McKee and applauding his parents for a job well done. The years have sure gone by fast. Jay's mother told me the other day that ber son now looks after himself. I think he dresses him- self' she laughed. Boy, has he come a long way. And he deserves every bit of suc- cess. Watch and listen for the name Jay McKee. Don Cherry will love him, another boy from Kingston. Farewell to Principal at Orono P.S.
