~( OronGWeekly T Forest biodiversity: More than just savling trees (NC)-Canadians have long recognized the need to conserve our natural environment. For more than twenty years, we have been participating in, Envîronment Week, a whole week dedicated to celebrating new and in- novative ways to conserve our natural heritage. With the May launch of the Canadian Biodiversity Strategy, a comprehensive strategy developed by the Canadian government, businesses, and conservation groups designed to ensure the sustainable use of biological resources, several organizations are accepting key roles in the conservation of biodiversity. One organization taking a leading role in its impie- mentation is Wildlife Habitat Canada (WHC), a non-govemment conservation organization. This non-profit organization has been helping Canadians make informed decisions about the environment for over ten years. Fulfilling their mandate te, conserve habitat for Canada' s wildlife, and as part of what they cali their "100% Solution" to habitat conservation, WHC bas participated in more than 20 private and corporate stewardship programs nationwide, working with thousands of landowners to, conserve habitat on their own land. WHC's approach to conservation is one of shared responsibility. "Wildlifc is one of the main visual indicators of a healthy environment, and this is one of the many reasons why we must pay dloser attention to its needs," says Dave Neave, Executive Director for Wildlife Habitat Canada. Neave suggests that Iwe must come up with a 100%0 solution to, the degradation of wildlife habitat, and this solution must include the participation of landowners, citizen groups, governments and corporations in caring for the entire Canadian landscape." The realization of this goal may not be far away for WHC. Attempting to integrate wildlife and timber objectives, they have proposed a unique voluntary programn for forest companies in which each participating company would contribute a percentage of its revenue generated from forest products te, a fund adminisýtered by W 'ildlife Habitat Caniada. This mioney wýouild be used te, fund forest boiest research which wiI.l elp) for.es-t managers to better manage Ltheir resouirces and maintain 1 ýCCfTUEJVING, Did you know? (NC)-Safe on-road cycle lanes are far cheaper to build than off road trails. The cost to retrofit 1.5 meter-wide shoulders on provincial highways would be about $48,800 per kilomnetre, whereas te, plan, design and build an asphaît bike path the cost would be more than $240,000. Choosing the cheaper alternative wili result in the creation of safe cycling facilities sooner, says Active Living- Go for Green! And sooner is better since air pollution in most Canadian cities is getting worse. Building safe access to existing road s will encourage the 18 million Canadians who already use their bicycles for recreation, to use them for trans- portation. The national initiative also works in close partnership with the Canadian Cycling Association who is instru- mental in promoting sound bicycling skills, helmet use and respect for traffic reglations. ;AIVELING ALTFRNATIvîF. This will assist forest companies when collecting the necessary information for the national certification process initiated by the Canadian Standards Association. It will also help companies meet their other goals and objectives related to the broader issue of bio- diversity conservation. The WHC Biodiversity Program for the Canadian Forest Industry will position Canada well in its attempt to achieve sustainable forestry practices. In a time wlîcîc a healthy environment is no longer a luxury and the relationship between human activity and the natural world is constantly changing, each and every one of us must remember that we can make a difference. Together we can help to protect our investment in Canada's wildlife.
