PSSS - PSSS - PSSS The above caption when vocal- ized does appear to -have somne meaning and certainly arouses an air of cuniosity and at tinies great' excitement in birds. The Psss Psss Psss is an easy vocalization for humans to create and is offered in phrases of l0Oto 15 seconds with crescendos and decrescendos in speed and volume. It is one of a number of vocal- izations created by birders to attract the attention of birds and to excite them te movement ini order to make identification. I picked this individual vocal- ization up from Jim Richards and have often been arnazed at tbe reac- tion it croates in a number of vani- euies of birds. Somne birds just have to investîgate the source of the sound and in doing so a botter chance is given the birder to make an identification. I have had some success in attracting Rosebreasted Grosbeaks, Scarlet Tanagers, Cardinals, many of the Warblers and of course the ever active and curious Cbickadee. Earlier this summner while trekking in the Ganaraska 1 came upon a habitat of brushy understo- ry that may have attracted ono of the Warblor spocies. AIl was quiet. A good timne te vocalize. On tho fourth attempt the bird in the brusb replied with their song. Tho two of uscarried our conver- sation for perhaps four or five min- Utes. Finally the Warbler could not contain ils curiosity any longer and came out of ,hiding. t was a Mourning Warbler. 1 gave the vocalization a couple of more times te witness bis concoms and looking about I shall now remember the Mourning Warbler's song. The most recent use of Psss Psss Psss was last F riday evening wben entering a marsh area boardwalk on the Pigeon River. Moving about in the aldors was a Warbler which we brougbt to a stop with the vocalization, Psss Psss Psss. t was obvious the bird was curious over the sound. As long as I kept up the sound at inter- vais the bird was banging around onabling me te put a possible tag of a female Nashville WaFbler. SAil tbe wbile witb binoculars focused on the Warbler 1 could hear the familiar songs of the Chickadees. In fact the vocalizing bad Chickadees closing in on me, and two flew in to perch only two feet away. L did count eigbt Chickadees and I'm sure there were a few more. 1 also feel if I bad had some suni- flower seeds witb me 1 could have had the Chickadees feeding out of my hands. For some five minutes or more there was a lot of bird action due to the vocalizing. t is that time of year when young are reaching near aduit sta- tus and this mnakes for an increase in the number of birds. The Port Perry sewage lagoons is now home to bundreds of Bluewinged Teal ducks and many Commron Galan and JAmserican Coot, those somewhat chicken like waterfowl. biI'er toha to ber 0f wamtI1e "ONE STOP" EDUCATION ..,,one combined calendar Look for al your edu(cational needs in a coordnated approach to aduit education and con tinuous icarning pro grains through one combined calendar produced by... e hani Cilege urhani Bnard of Education -1,mRgion Roiun Catholic Separate School Bo0ard Register Now! 905-576-6150 905-721-2000 905-579-1990 Leaders are needed for Guiding in Kirby 1 see by the calendar that September is rapidly approaching.
