Everyone has their favorite. Whether you splurged a lit- tie, or a lot, your body may need some extra care this week to help remove the junk food leftovers. Fastlng is often associat- ed wlth cleansing the body, but many of uis are flot wil- ing, or don't need to take such drastic action. A gen- tier approach is described *below, try it for 2 or 3 days and enjoy how much better your body feels. Eat lightly and avoid highly processed foods. You can overload your body by eating too much, even when your choices of food are good ones. Make sure what you eat counts i a positive way. Focus on wliole foods and stay away frorn things that corne in fancy packages. Choose fibrous foods. Fruits, vegetables, legumes (beans, lentils) and whole grains are high in fibre and Letter to the Editor Dear Troy: With my family, 1 have enj oyed another weekend at the annual Orono Fair. This year I made an interesting observation in that arnong the many fine features of the fair lie the hidden talents of Ward 111 Regional Counilor Ann Dresiinýski. Councillor Dreslinski rises above the cream as the most moooving 'MC'... Mistress of Ceremoies ... 1 have ever seen. For a num- ber of years, she has not only trained the lovely little porkers for the annual pig races, moooving on to mun-. ning ducks in this years' event, but she is also a champion performner in her introduction of her hustling darlings and her goading of the enthusiastic crowds. This year 1 had the added pleasure of observlng Councillor Dreslinski host (MC') the Big Brothers Pet Show. Kudos to the Councillor! Not only does Ann welcorne the competi- tors to the stage with kind- ness and gentie humour, but she could be mistaken for Marna Noah command- ing the creatures of the Ai-k. Coundllor Dreslinski's ami- able famillarity with pigs, chickens, dogs, cats, turties, lizards, snakes and charrn- ing hamsters revealed her as top dog i the 'MC' depart- ment. What will it be next, Ann? Slncerely, Helen this works like a D)roon to sweep the systern dean. t is especîally beneficial to stant your day with a fibrous breakfast. Try mixlng fresh fruit with a bran cereal. Choose foods that are rich in vitamins and mineraIs, low in fat and can be eateni raw. You want to give your body the nutrients it needs to repair the damiage caused by the junk food binge. A raw vegetable salad, mixed with kidney, lima or garban- zo beans and served with a baked potato or steamed broccoli delivers a giant helping of body repairing nutrients. Drink water. Water works with the fibre to help cleanse the body. If there isn't enough water in the body, fibre turus to cernent Àn the intestines. Since water dilutes the digestive juices it should be' drank between, not with, your meals. Cleanse twice a day. Toxins are released through the skin and you want to encourage their rernoval. Give yourself a good rub- down with a loofah sponge, or a facecloth, to help remove the waste and dead skin celîs. Go for a walk. Breath deeply. Fresh air helps the body cleanse. Exercise improves your circulation, which ensures the nutrients get spread throughout the body anci the waste prod- ucts get plcked up and taken to the appropriate organ of excretion. Sleep. Your body is grow- lng new celis and repairing damnage ail the Urne; howev- er, the majority of actlvity happens while yoù sleep. Plan to get a little extra rest over the next few days. Although this cleanup programn is very gentle, it may cause somne discomfort for people who normally eat highly processed foods, a lot of animal products, or for those who suifer from health problemns. These people should consult with their doctor before they make any major dietary changes (even if it is only for a few days). Their nutritionîst cani tailor the dlean-up program to their situation and help thema understand what their body isgoing through.
