The Year-End Champion lni this event was Ritchie Welch of Camridge. This cowboy also won the Bareback Bronc Riding and was the Ail Around Champion, of the Rodeo. Steven Prince made the town of Wingham proud with his performance which won him the Junior Steer Wrestllng titie. This event is open to riders -age eight to fifteen years is perfect practice for these future bull riders. Mutton Bustin' is arguably the "most danger- ous rodeo event". The com- petitors aged three to eight try to ride a sheep for eight seconds: no easy task. These future rodeo finalist were al winners! 'In less than ten seconds Jason Thompson had lis caîf roped and tled to win the Caif Roplng event. Rlck Cook and Ken Doner were the top Teamn Roping Flnalists. The five Doner brothers are an excellent example- of a rodeo family: four of the brothers are in the finals and two of Doner chiîdren are Mutton Busters'. Brian Doner had three excellent rides to win the Saddle Bronc Riding event. This Janetville resi- dent lias won an impressive eleven Year-End-champion- sh ips. Up-and-coming Country and Western singers thoroughly entertained the crowd at a Western Jamboree on Saturday after- noon. These entertainers are aIl winners from theý Open Country Singers Competi- tion held at the C.N.E. this past summer. One of the youngest winners joined the band Chaser to sing a cou- ple of tunes on Saturday niglit. Thirteen hundred- tickets werd sold for Friday's dance by Opie Horse Blue on Friday and Chaser's perfor- mance on § aturday. A great time was has by ail. There we-re many things for childrefi to see and do at the Rodeo. Children fed and, walked Bob, and Cathy Sampson's exquisite Morgan Horse, Trillium Reflections. The Sampson's breed, show and board these genfle com- panions ai their Trillium Morgan Horse Farm, located in Orono. Also on display was the ctouple's antique Baynes Horse carniage. Built in Hamiltoni the early 1900s, the carriage lias the original leather fenders, vanity mir- tors and kerosene lamps. Kenjen Petting Zoo was a very popular spot with the kids. Goats, pot bellied pigs, zebos and a talking duck got up close. and personal with the littli ones: But don't' dare ignore any of the goats or they will nibble on your jeans to get your attention! Seniors were bused in from thesurroundmng com- mumities to enjoy an after-, noon of shows and events planned especially for them. The United Way commit- tee of Clarlngton and the Long Sault Ridge Runners Snowmobile Clubs hosted the pancake breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday morn- ing. These groups served up nearly 3,000 griddle cakes to hungry cowboys and cow- girls! Thanks to Quaker Oats and Skylight Donuts for the fixins'. Rodeo participants gave thanks at a Sunrise Gospel Service on Sunday, followed by gospel singing which included the talented Norma Gale of Oshawa. The championship bene- fits charitable organizations too. With the assistance of the Ontario, Rodeo Association, T.R.A.C.K. - Therapeutic -Riding Association for Challenged Kids - gained exposure for pO~ %it~ k Iti their program and raised funds for the hydraulic lift they hope to purchase soon. Located In -Uxbrldge, T.R.A.C.K. provides riding therapy for physlcally hand- icapped and learning dis- abled chldren. The oppor- tunlty to ride and socialize gives these children physi- cal, psychological and social benefits. The lift, which wil cost approximately $20,000, is necessary to assist the older children to mount their horses. The organiza- tion sold T-shirts in the Western Mail and by Saturday, the organization had raised approximately $ 1,500 towards the lift. Thirty other vendors at the Western Mal had beautiful western garb for sale. The members of the Bowmanville Rotary Club and the Kinsmen Club should be commended for their part in sponsoring the Clarington Rodeo Days for the third year.
