4 - Orono Weekly Timnes. Wednesday, September 27, 1995 Family Auto foil Newcastle hockey debut Orono's OMHA PeeWee entry, th'e Family Auto Leafs opened the 1995-96 hockey season on a winning note in Newcastle Tuesday, September 19. The Leafs coasted to a 6-1 victory in an exhibition contest over the new look Stars in rather uneventful fashion. This year's lineup consists of newcomers John Halik, Brandon Hills, Matthew Bourgeois. Filling out the roster are veterans Bob Witheridge, Greg Shetler, Tyler Robinson, Paul Landers, Greg Bester, Brandon Caruana, Andrew Beacock, Jamie Parry, and injured defenceman Mike Knox. Coaching staff is headed by John Witheridge, with Stu Irwin (assistant/trainer), Scott Sawyer (assistant), Ray Bester (manager), and Dave Shetler (statistician/public relations). Once again Stan Gylytiuk, the Leafs greatest fan and booster is welcomed back as club sponsor for Family Auto Sales. Newcastle which has not had an OMHA Pee Wee entry for a couple of seasons and with only limited pre-season practice experience, exhibit- ed a timid uninspired approach to the game. The Leafs under the auspices of head coach John Witheridge and a month's worth of ice time behind them on the other hand, appeared to be in mid-season form as they grabbed an early 3-0 lead after one period. The Stars tightened up defensively in the middle frame however as they held the visitors to a scoreless tie. Orono added three more goals in their final period including two power play markers. Newcastle's lone score was actually a shorthanded tally late in the game. Final shots favoured the Leafs by a con- vincing 35-12 margin. Next outing for Orono is another exhibition encounter tenta- tively scheduled on home ice for Friday, September 29 at 9:00 p.m. in Orono arena. See you there! Leaflets: . . . Coach Witheridge had indicated a "spot" on the club has been saved for injured perennial favourite Mike "Knoxy" Knox, Knoxy broke his right femur (upper leg) in early August in a soccer match and will be in traction for at least 2 more weeks, he faces a couple of months of thera- py so his immediate hockey future is on hold -for the moment, we wish him well! . . . Rookie netminder Matt Bourgeois will be backed up this season by utility veteran Jamie Parry (I hope you got a lucrative contract Jamie!) . . . Orono saw some familiar faces in Newcastle's Jineup Tuesday, namely ex-Leafs Matt McGlynn, Ryan Leddy, and Scott Poole who are all fired up for the new season and the ensuring "crosstown rivalry" ala Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs ... The season open- er against Newcastle saw the Leaf veterans do all the scor- ing as Tyler Robinson and Brandon Caruana bagged 2 markers each with singles going to Greg Shelter and Andrew Beacock . . . Defencemen Greg Bester and Paul Landers each had a 'helper' and Bob 'Jean' Witheridge chipped in with 3 assists! . . . Rookies Jeff Thompson and Jonathan Whitehead contributed with an assist each. . . Matt Reid, John Halik and Brandon Hills all skated strongly for Orono. . . although seldom tested, Matt Bourgeois was steady when called upon between the pipes for Orono ... D.S. "We want the com- munity to understand the difference between viral and bacterial meningitis because the symptoms are the same," said Dr. Linda Panara, Durham Region's Associate Medical Officer of Health. Viral meningitis gets bet- ter on its own, but bacterlal itecnbclt SERVICES meningitis is a more serious disease that must be treated with antibiotics. Doctors order a blood test and a spinal tap to determine the type of meningitis; the lab tests confirmed viral menin- gitis in the teenager. A person experiencing high fever, severe headache, neck pain, nausea, vomiting and possibly a rash should see a doctor to determine the cause of the symptoms.
