Local merchants and, res- idents appeared before Coundil on Monday to voice their opposition to a pro- posed rezoning of the lands once owned by Sunocojust east of the Veltri Complex. Mr. Erwin Kuýriz, -the owner of the property in queýstion, is asking Counicil to rezone the land to a C-1 ides-igna- tion, wbjicb would alljow the land to be used for a retail outlet, commnercial offices, a restaurant or a donut shop. Mr. Kuriz already bas a tenant for the spa ce. Baker's Dozen, a donut chain, bas expressed a desire to locate there. This has becomne a con- cern of local mnerchiants. Dan Hoîkema, owner of. Skyltgbt Donuts, -wbich is located rigbt across the Street from the land in ques- tion, was particularly wor- ried. Mr. Hoîkema does not want the property rezoned to allow a competitor to set up across from hlm. "Location accounts for 60.% of our business," said Mr. Hoîkema.- To have a large chain open across the street would greatly impact upon bis business, which he bas run ai thai location since 1986. Members of the Grade il1 Visuai Arts Class at Clarke H-igh Sc'hool are seen hiere with' somne of the sculptures they c-reated for a class project called the Self Portrait Sculpture. The students were given wig-heads and told to interpret their own personailities as sculp- tures. The extent of the project was great, ranging from the fantastic to the realistic. Judging by some of the sculptures, there are some really interesting kids in the class. Mrs Amy Hoad, the teacher of the class wias ple-ased with the results. She called the pro- ject a "really creati;ve task answered in a 3-dimensional sculptural form" She adds, "The kids really enjoyed the assignmTentit."
