Sonbon Home Flyers with slow season start The Newcastle Sonbon Home Flyers started the sea- son off slowly with one win in three games . The D&B Hawks from Orono came to, town on October lSth and knocked off the Flyers 8-1. Craig McLeod scored the only goal. On October 22nd, the Flyers travelled to Orono to take on the Shoppers and prevailed by a 11-2 score. Dave Harriswas the big shooter with 5 goals. Craig McLeod, Dave Wright and- Larry Pearce scored two each. October 27th the Flyers were in Oshawa for a game against Macîntosh Chrysler and were beaten 5-2. Craig McLeod scored both goals for the Flyers. Apple Blossom Novice drop a close one The fans in the, Orono arena barely opened up their coffees before #7 of Hobb Bakker Bergin scored on a sleepy Orono team (13.26). This wake-up cal was answered by an impres- sive* forecheckinig effort by Josh Moffat (# 14). At 8:03, with Orono shorthanded, Greg Dunham (# 17) sent a speeding Garrett Wood (# 12) in alone, just missing. But Bowmanville answered with #7Ts second goal of the game in a high shot at 7:20 while Orono was stili short. A fesyChris Buttonshaw (#35) set the tone for period 2 with tenacious back- checking 'and breaking up numerous Bowmanville plays at the blue line. The second started with strong defense by Mike Fuller (# 12) while Orono was shorthanded again. Josh Moffat {# 14) and Chris Buttonshaw (#35) both con- tinued to hait the opposition offense at the blueline. Ryan Campney (#9) burst up the Ieft wing feeding Joseph Staples (#4) in th slot, but they found the crease.clogged with three defenders. Orono brought in goalie Carl Tordiff (# 10) mid-period who was tested early with four tougli shots in a two minute span, one a dlean break from the blue- line, but Bowmanville left empty. Period 3 was again score- less, but good hustle and speed by Derek Sellars (#5) almost ended Orono's scor- ing drought. Ben Bell (# 15) sprinted in from a break at the blue line snapping a shot on goal, providing Orono with if's best chance of the third. Orono killed ifs third penalty to end the game. The Leafs dropped a 5-3 decision to a tough Millbrook club- in Orono Friday, October 27. It was Family Auto's first loss after five starts in the early season. Millbrook jumped into a 3-0 lead after one period of play on a 12-3 shot differential. The visi- tors led 4-2 afrer two frames. Millbrook outshot Orono 23- 18 in the match. Leafs' Bob Witheridge scored bis fifth of the season on a power play. Centre Tyler Robinson notched his third of the campaign in a losing cause. Defenceman Greg Bester scored bis first of the year and also added an assist. Bester factored offensive- ly as well in the Leafs second tough weekend matchup as they edged the hosting Manvers Mustangs 3-1 Sunday, October 28. With Orono up 2-1 the'Leaf blue- limer netted a shorthanded marker late in the game on a skiîlfully orchestrated end- to-end rush. Both clubs played scoreless hockey in the first period.
