The dilemma of having two distinct and separate hydro authorities in Clarington has become a hot issue las of late. Clarington Hydro wants to have its boundary expanded to include ail of Clarington. At-present, there are areas serviced by Ontario Hydro within Clarington limits. If Clarington Hydro does not provide the power for al of Clarfington, why- should we have it? Why should there be two similar services providing for customers? Sounds like the donut problem to me. Clarington Hydro says that it will decrease its rates to consumers. Rural customers will save 7% on their bills, and municipal customers will save'.3%, according to Dave Clark, who made a presentation to Council on Monday. If these savings can be believed, why is there a problem? George Van Dyk, a, businessman on the Clarington Hydro Commission assured everyone that the level of service would remain the samne. They wouîd also'be providing jobs for hydro workers displaced by the- change in boundaries. 1So far the biggest opposition to the change bas come from Central Ontario Eîectric, a retail utility for Ontario Hydro. They have been against boundary expansion since d'av one. It does net rmake sense, especially in light of the fact that Ontario Hydro, the Ministryý of Eniergy, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and the Municipal Electric Association have been working together on the boundary issue. The only real reason I can see is that Clarington Hydro's salaries are abouit 14% less thani Ontario Hydro's. These workers do not want to see thiat pay cut. You really can't blame them. Thiere hiave( been concernis about hiow Claringtoni Hydro can pay for this expansion, and what it will cost. The bottomi line is, if the expansion is not done, it will cost customiers $ 1 million every year it is delayed. In these toughil timnes let's do the smnart thing and Save the people some 'money.
