8- Ororia Weekly Times, Wednesday. December 20, 1995 Christmas of '95! WiIl you Iremember this Christmas as a Christmas filled with joy and contentmnent? Will you look back in ten years from now and wish for the good old days of Christmas '95? Or will you recali this time as one of the saddest, loneliest imes of your life? Often we enjoy the tradition of family gatherings, gift giving, meals of abundance and mer- ryrnaking without truly realiz- ing how fortunate we are. This Christmas, as with s0 many others, miany people will be experiencing a different Christmas. A Christmas with- out family. A Christmas with- out gifts. A Christmas without the traditional turkey meal. A Christmas without j oy. 1 know there are so many wonderful church groups and organiza tions working diligent- ly to help bring food and gifts to families in need, and this is a wonderful service of caring being extendcd in our society. But deep below the surface layers of our society are many individuals experiencing the devastation of loss of a loved one, the fresh pain of a mar- niage break-up, the overpoWer- ing feelings of înadequacy ai-id failure. Some are deeply depressed and lonely beyond comprehension. Yes, in the middle of this most joyful season, can be found the miost intense emo- tional suffening. Christmas season is one of the highest suicidai times of the year! As- we go about our Christmas preparations we should try to extend ourselves that littie bit more than a donated jar of peanut butter or Kraft Dinner - which by the way is a very necessary donation greatly appreciated by many and reach inside ourselves te, share our own j oy and content- ment. A kind word or special gift for someone that you know is going through a hard time can work miracles. An invitation to include a neighbour or associ- ate, who appears to need a gen- tie pick-me up, in an evening of visiting, can give the person an opportunity to meet others and smile for awhile. As a child, I knew many Christmases of family tradition and decorations that eclîpsed the memory of church dona- tions of used gfts and toys and- food baskets. Christmas was my family. To each of us Christmas is something different.,, This year make Christmas of 95-special by remembering that you have the ability to brighten someone's life in some small way. Merry Christmas to ail!
