6 - Orono WeeklyTimes, Wednesday, January 10, 1996 Orono Atom Donut Gallery Hockey News Liberty Stops Apples Streak It has been a very busy Christmas season for the Orono Donut Gallery team. The Atoms won an exhibition game against Crow's Sports on December 20, 1995. Tyler Gregg, the team's leading goal-scorer, sunk one only one minute into the game. Robert Roth passed the puck to Tyler in our own end, and Tyler did the rest of the work, deking Crow's Sports and getting the goal. Donut Gallery protected this one-goal lead for the rest of the game to win the match 1--0. Steven Webb played a strong defensive game, and Kevin Martin set up Jordan Beacock for the other good scoring opportunity of the match. Orono Donut Gallery trav- elled to Keene for a one-day tournament on December 28, 1995. The first game was against a strong Keswick team - Georgina Auto Glass. Orono skated one of their best games of the season. Winger Chris Ouimet made a number of good plays to move the puck up ice and create scoring opportunities for Tyler Gregg's line, which includes left winger Robert Roth. However, with 47 sec- onds remaining in the first period, it was Keswick who scored first. Late in the sec- ond period, Orono put a lot of pressure on Keswick. Kevin Martin weaved through the opposition on two great breakaway's but was just short of scoring a goal. Kienan Williams had two shots on net which were stopped by the goalie. Finally on a rush centered by Jordan Beacock, winger Will Lofgren popped a beautiful goal in the net on a perfect pass by Matt Barnes. The game ended in a 1-1 tie, which led to the first shoot-but of the day. Goalie Josh Brandt was outstanding for Orono, but the Orono shooters were unable to beat the Keswick goalie. In sud- den death shoot-out, a Keswick player finally beat Josh Brand the eight shot for the win. The second game of the tournament was played against the Otonabee Wolves. Tyler Gregg was on fire, with numerous shots on net. He took the puck from behind his own net, he picked up the The Orono Week&~ Your Community Newspaper Since 1937 puck off the board and he was set up twice on great passes from Kevin Martin. Tyler had eight great scoring opportunities, but was stopped cold by the Wolves hot goalie. Shawn DeJong played a great tournament defensively, which kept Orono in the game. However, in this game, he also released a bul- let shot on net which almost scored. Kevin Pritchard real- ly shone in this game and had two breakaway shots on net to no avail. Jordan Beacock was also thwarted on four shots on net. It got to the point where felt that Donut Gallery couldn't buy a goal this game. Although most of the game was played in the offensive end, Jeff Dickenson made a good defensive play blocking a shot and turning it into a break- away opportunity. Orono Donut Gallery's sec- ond game remained scoreless which led to shoot-out #2 of the day. In the best of three shots on net, Orono won this game. Goalie Josh Brandt was flawless and the Wolves did not stand a chance. Captain Kevin Pritchard and Robert Roth both scored for the Orono team to notch the win and go on to the "B Championship." The "B Championship" game was played against Immaculate Conception. Tyler Gregg scored right off the bat, on a passing play by Kienan Williams and Robert Roth. This evenly matched game became a tightly played battle right to the end, with defencemen Steven Webb and Shawn DeJong playing the game of their life to protect Orono's lead. Jordan Beacock, Matt Barnes, Kevin Pritchard, Shawn DeJong, Mike Teixeira and Tyler Gregg all had shots on net, but were unable to score. Mike Knapp and Jeff Dickenson combined to put some pressure on Immaculate Conception to no avail. Late in the game it looked like Robert Roth scored but it was waved no- goal by the referee. Midway through the third period, Immaculate Conception scored a lucky goal that ended the game in a 1-1 tie. Guess what - Orono Donut Gallery went to it's third shoot-out of the day. Orono goalie Josh Brandt always gets plenty of work in games played by his team. Three games in six hours, more than sixty shots on net and three shoot-outs later, Josh Brandt was outstand- ing. Unfortunately in the best of three shots, the Orono players were scoreless, and the Immaculate Conception beat Josh once to score the win. Orono Atom Donut Gallery finished "B Runners-up" in the Keene Tournament. It was the best hockey played by this team, who finally showed a real competitive streak and solid teamwork. Congratulations. Saturday night Iecember 16 Apple Blossom Shop Novice travelled to the rec centre and faced off against Liberty Mutual. Apple start- ed with 3 scratches and it showed as the game wore on. Bowmanville scored 2 goals late in the first at 4:44 and 2:21,although the play was even end to end action. Bruisin Brandon West (3) banged up Bowmanville along the boards and Dyno Dave Landman (99) worked up and down the wings against a tough checking team. Joltin Josh Moffat (17) jammed up the corners making life tough for Bowmanville's offence. The period ended with even shots on net. In the second Apple's appeared to be dropping everywhere as the defense sagged and the offense sput- tered with most of the play in Orono's end. Liberty regis- tered 10 shots on a bruised and battered goalie before Orono mustered a long shot on net. At 6:098 Orono was tagged with a penalty and Liberty answered quickly scoring át 5:13. They scored again at 3:36 off a scramble. Orono's closest scoring chance came from Collider Chris Buttonshaw (9) just missing in front. After being outshot 12 to 1 in the second Apple began to warm up in third and came out with even shots on net. Liberty scored at 9:48. At 6:22 Gunner Greg Dunham (11) scored for Apple on a break-right side. Apples Gunner was hooked by two defensemen from centre ice and over the blueline when he let go a high backhand shot over the goalie's shoul- der and under the crossbar. The offense could have picked up some more shots in this period but were constantly foiled by a Bowmanville defense that forced each rush into the boards. The streak ended at three!
